Now Chrome Can Get Banned?

We've always had high restrictions on the environmental aspect of our chrome shops here in Ontario...that's why it costs over $1000 to chrome plate one Cuda bumper here :'(

Hexavalent chromium has been a known carcinogen for years.  Trivalent chromium is safe and so are many complexes of chromium and other elements like strontium.  Surprised it has taken California this long!

A couple years ago, I found a nice Challenger front bumper core at a swap meet which I purchased to replace the incorrect "notched" one on my '71, and gave it to a friend who does trim and chrome restoration (mainly preps and then takes or ships the parts to shops for the plating or anodizing), and he charged me $425.
I saw him recently as he also manages the storage building my 71 is stored in, and he pointed to its bumper and said lucky you got that bumper chromed when you did, they're charging over $800 now!
So chroming has already doubled in the last few years?

71's started coming with the notched bumpers in the later part of 71 production FYI.

Yup, that's why the notched bumper that was on my 10/70 build '71 bugged me, and I am glad I jumped on that correct core and got it replated when I did!
Now if I could only find a new home for the mint notched Challenger bumper I replaced with the correct style...

But it's perfectly fine for Monsanto to feed us carcinogenic chemicals. Go figure.  :thinking:

Europe banned hexavalent years ago and only allows parts with trivalent in along with numerous other restrictions, many in the US are going to trivalent also but I didn`t realize it was used in the chroming process. Our vendors had numerous issues with trivalent when it was first being used but they seem to have figured it out now, hopefully they can come up with a less toxic solution for chrome shops to use.

I've been sending my chrome jobs to Texas for years.  There is a plating shop down the street from me in Palm Springs, CA.  I'd love to give a local business work, but they can't compete.  They aren't starving either with a good supply of industrial work.

I assume the end-stage chromed product is not a problem, just the chroming process?

There are lots of non auto industry chrome products, i.e. plumbing, lighting, decorations, etc. but those probably all come chromed from China and don't a lot of re-chroming. Still, a ban would have some impact.

A good friend several years back owned a chrome shop and metal polishing business. Did some really nice work for a lot of the hot Rodders and classic car guys in the area. I used to advertise for him when ever I went to a cruise or a show here in SoCal. I brought a lot of business in for him, this was much appreciated. He told me whatever I could pull off my Challenger he would plate it, for free. Under the hood this is evident, brackets engine parts, nuts and bolts. For the meantime I'll just leave things the way they are. A Slant6 with a lot of bling.    Al

We [Peterbilt] have struggled to find adequate chromers for quite a long time that will handle big parts like semi bumpers. Most of the chroming processes are pretty gnarly...
