Early production LA built 70 Challenger R/T 440 4V 4-speed. Steering column has a barrel below the crush can that rotates when ignition switch is turned from off to on and start. Engine bay end of column has a arm sticking out like a column shifted auto car would have. That is all that is there. What is its purpose and what all am I missing?
Thanks forum!

With the mechanism in place, the shifter has to be put into reverse in order to remove the key.  Sounds like you are missing the linkage that connects to the shifter.  Should be able to find a diagram in the FSM.

Also try Googling 70 Cuda or Challenger reverse lock out for pics and links to other threads on this subject.

Brewers Performance has all the components for the lockout mechanism.  They will sell individual parts if you already have some of the parts or a complete kit if you need everything.

The lockout system is a bit of a PITA and many people removed it back in the day.  I am still getting used to it in my recently restored 70 Challenger.

Not a 440, but here are some pictures of the original interlock linkage on my 70 Cuda 340 small block, 4 speed. First pic is from above by the steering column, 2nd is underneath looking forward, 3rd is the shaft to the reverse lever on transmission. Mine is a little finicky but still operates. Hope it helps.

From the Service manual, interlock parts in green.

Adjusting instructions. Curious what the locating slots are?

You can post some wanted ads on the forums and start trolling eBay and swap meets.  The search will be a little easier now that you know what you're missing and what the part looks like.  The Brewers site is very useful for comparing pictures of the different set ups.

Many thanks to all that responded. That is exactly the info I needed and a bit more. The best forum going!

Was this only on manual cars?
Would an auto car have that linkage?

Looks like it had something that used that same part on the column. Not sure what position the shifter needed to be in.
