Folks, I have a 1971 Cuda 4 speed that I'm going to upgrade with a Hellcat Hellcrate motor, an upgraded 5 Speed and Dana 60 rear. As you can imagine there are tons of "in between" parts to swap and upgrade along the way.
I'm still sourcing most of the parts but the car and just the motor are on the way as of now. The folks at Roseville Moparts have been amazingly helpful and I'm waiting to hear back from them on a list of goodies I want to order.

Thank you for the heads up. These folks here were using all the wiring and ecu directly from a car where both are different than the kit supplied by Mopar for the crate.

Remember the warranty starts when you pick it up... I think the best approach is to do all the pre-work you can before buying the engine.... Kinda like Goody has done, running driving with a 5.7 so the swap is a fairly simple ordeal....
The new Dana 60 has been ordered and should take about a month thanks to Dr Diff. The transmission and all its glorious bits tid bits are ordered and will start to ship this week. Roseville Moparts is putting together a list of some other fun goodies I will be ordering like the RMS front end and other engine stuff.
As everything rolls in I will provide pictures and detailed installation notes for anyone who wants to read them.

Make sure you find some good brakes and traction as its going to get hairy. Im assuming you also have a large chest of money because I can only imagine the :bigmoney: this will take.
For brakes I'm doing a 12" Wilwood setup. For traction I'm looking at the 17x9 Year One Rally wheels in the back and the 17x8 up front. I'm still up in the air on the wheels and haven't pulled the trigger on them.
The Dana 60 is being built for me and will ship in the next 3-4 weeks. The RMS front end is also being built and should ship in the next few weeks too.
Small parts for the transmission have begun to show up. There was a minor issue withe clutch and I needed to send it back for a different one (wrong part number)
Parts are starting to roll in like the trans and bell housing.

Your going custom so I think the shifter fits. If your interior and dash and what not is going to be OEM, maybe it will look odd. Sounds like your car will look fairly stock minus a wicked drive-train.
The interior will be 100% stock looking and the same for the outside of the car besides the wheels. For wheels I'm looking at the year one 17 inch rally wheels. I'd like to keep the spirit of the factory Cuda image as intact as I can while squeezing in some upgrades.

:iagree: I watch these shows more often than I would like because the other programming just bores me. With the show you are talking about I watched them chop a '32 Ford coupe where the doors would not even close on the passenger side. They raped the guy who bought it with the poor workmanship that I think started the ball rolling for the lead mechanic to leave the show. Much of these shows are for entertainment for the masses. How many shops have we worked on where the shenanigans and mistakes were tolerated as we see in these shows. I know of one host of these shows who would be afraid of who is waiting outside for him after work the way he talks to his employees.
I am watching this build because it interests me very much and I hope everything works out well. I hope the wring harness is as the factory boasts or at least close to a plug and play scenario.

I'd call them and see if they would be willing to exchange the black handle for the OE chrome. but leave the carbon fiber grips. that's what I have on mine.

Here is the harness that comes with the Hellcat engine controller setup. You remove the harness that comes on the motor from the factory and install this new harness. I'm sure the madness for that is that the engine they send you are pulled from the lineup going into cars so they are dressed up for an actual production car. This harness doesn't have all the other tied in hook ups. I'll set them side by side once I take that harness off the motor. Did you order your valve cover shields separately or did they come with the accessory kit.
I was assuming they would have thrown those in but they are not with our crate engine...

I think i sold the manifolds the same day and clutch within a couple of days after that. I priced it to go instead of trying to get every penny out of it.
I have two motors to sell of the exhaust manifolds, the 392 and the Hellcat. I'll leave the 392 intact in case it sells. I currently don't have a project for it so I listed it.
I'll get the Hellcat up on a engine stand and take the manifolds off soon.

So, is it an optical illusion, or do the bolt holes not line up on the oil pan?
Its not an illusion, on the Milodon 31000 oil pan the holes don't line up. They don't line up due to the crank pulley on the Hellcat. The pan is easily modified to fit by grinding the lip and drilling 2 new holes.
The GREAT news is that in working with MoparDave, Roseville Moparts and Milodon is that Milodon has released a specific Hellcat oil pan and you no longer need to modify the 31000 pan.
Roseville is sending me out the new oil pan and they are allowing me to keep the first pan for a couple days to shoot some side by side pictures to share. I'll share out the comparison shots and then mail back the 31000 pan.
oem windage tray arrived so that and the pan will be shipped out to you today.

Quick question. Of the few Hellcats conversions being completed right now. Why do the clutches the hellcats come with have to be scrapped. Is there not a standard trans that will work with these conversions as is. clutch- from the factory these are mated to the TR6060 which is completely different then the T56. nothing is interchangeable between the 2 and to retro fit a TR6060 is a huge hassle. much easier to get the T56 kit or if you wanted an auto the A41.
Bushing- the engine John bought was built for an auto. All FCA Auto cranks have the bushing to hold the nose of the torque converter. Must be removed to install the pilot bearing.

If you need a price on the T56 Kit LMK I can work that for you. YES your missing a bunch of parts. may be easier for you to call me. Did you get the wiring kit? that has the info packet with in it.
This is a perfect place to hash these things out. As Dave said the reason you don't or typically don't use the clutch that comes on the Hellcat is due to you're not using the same factory transmission. There are some great manual trans choices to pick from. If you haven't picked yet I'd be happy to cover the ones I looked at.

It should start to get more excting here over the next few weeks. The RMS suspension may ship this, the rear leafs are ordered and the new updated oil pan is on the way.
The Hellcat is still on the stand waiting for the updated oil pan. The plan is to take pictures of the part number 31000 and the 31030 pan side by side for anyone to see the differences. Then I"ll ship the 31000 pan back. The 31000 pan will work fine with modifications and the new 31030 pan is a direct no modofication fit. This latest pan 31030 was just released and thanks to
@MoparDave (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/mopardave_10) I have the new updated pan on the way.
Once I get the new pan on the motor I'll flip it back over and get the flywheel attached and pilot bearing installed. I'll attach the transmission to the engine and set it on the roller engine/trans stand.
I attended the Mopar show this weekend and picked up a TTI Header back exhaust. It looked good at the show and will match up nice to the rest of the car.
Did you get your trans stuff from Silver Sport? I have a quote and may call to order the whole kit today.

The correct pan to use is the 31030 pan. The 31030 pan is the pan with rounded bulge at the front of the pan.

They may not be sexy welds but they are fully intact. I've never had trouble with a Milodon pan weld.

Thank you and I'll keep you up to date as the car progresses. I have a lot of the major pieces now and I'm waiting on the oil pan to come back from powder coating. Once back I'll assemble the engine and get the trans mounted up.

I know the Alterktion K frame is very popular but there only downfall I see is they have to use a shorter shock and spring set up due to there design with the upper shock mount which amounts to a stiffer ride and limited travel, but everything looks very nice.
I finished this one this weekend. It was very slick. Your RMS looks very nice as well. I see they all seem to share the same components.
I wonder what that sway bar is eye to eye ? :dunno:

Did you order a angle oil filter adapter to cure your filter issue?
Ours should be here this week with my oil pan from Magnum Force.
At the moment I have an adapter on the way to run the filter directly to the block versus a angle adapter. I'll let you know how it fits.

Yes just many other motors where the filter will screw directly the block and the block is the sealing surface.

The first picture is the factory hellcat oil filter adapter
The second picture is the 45 degree adapter that you can buy from Mopar direct and comes with that small oil filter.
The third picture is the oil filter adapter bolt to mount the filter directly to the block.
With the RMS frame you cannot use the factory Hellcat oil filter adapter that comes with the crate motor.
You can use either the 45 degree adapter or just the adapter bolt alone.
The 45 degree kit cost you $98. The adapter bolt cost you $15. Both will work fine. The 45 adapter is really close to the rack but it can be trimmed to fit to your liking.
I'll get some pictures of this mounted up.

Good to know the 45 degree fits RMS. It will not fit with a stock K-member.

Only snag we hit with ours was not really with the 45 degree adapter was actually more of a engine mount issue related to the location of the adapter.
See photos.
I had to grind a small section off the block to get the mount to seat properly. As you know there is very little clearance between the adapter and the engine mount. I put everything together and found out the adapter was in the way of installing the engine mount bolt.. Once everything is installed it is easier to get the engine mount plate off the engine than take the adapter back off.. No biggie just a pita.
I think you can see it installed in the last pic.
Keep us posted on any snags you hit as it will be very helpful.
Crap at my age I have trouble changing the oil in my car let alone doing a swap with all the engineering. This is quite a project and should turn heads at the shows. I'd love to see you pull up to a new rustang and blow his doors off. :worship:

The pictures above show the incorrect bell housing and the correct one side by side. I pulled the backing plate off and installed the new one and reinstall the flywheel and clutch assembly.
You can also see the starter parter number 9523 set in place. It does NOT hit the block and it does contact the header. It just barely touches the header and is an easy fix. Again you don't have to grind the block.

Here are some pictures of the Mopar 45 degree adapter and how it fits with the RMS suspension. Bottom line is it fits and its tight.
There are a couple of pictures where you see the engine block mating flange where the adapter mounts to. Here you have another option where you can use just the adapter bolt and not the 45 degree adapter.

I posted these couple of pictures over on Facebook for fun. I have an LT4 laying around for another project and I couldn't resist rolling it under the car and taking a few pictures.
Here are some pictures of the oil filter using the single threaded adapter.

I've test fitted the motor so far and like what I see. I had to remove the number 2 and 4 coil pack along with the alternator to get the engine to clear easily.
What a major accomplishment. Hopefully you can find some traction. Looks fast.

These two pics are of the stock Mopar AC setup on the Hellcat. There are two issues using this setup. One is how are you going to control the variable compressor? the second is the clearance between the rack lines and the ac lines.
The solution is the Bouchillon compressor setup. This compressor doesn't need a controller for the variable blades inside and the lines are in a optimal location for routing.
Why the new AC compressor ?
1, the stock pump has a variable style pump, this was done for fuel economy where the pump can run but instead of on or off now with the variable pump it can be on a lot more but with minimal load and therefor minimal cooling
2. the lines on the factory pump are in a very poor location, they almost contact the rack fittings.
3. they don't make a manifold set to bolt on to the pump so you can use custom lines. You would need to jury rig some thing to connect your lines to the compressor lines
Extremely helpful information, you're making it really easy for the next guy doing one of these swaps :worship: :twothumbsup:

You have a valid point. In this case the line is floating and easily moved allow for pad replacement.

I'm using TTI headers, the compress is different physically. It looks mostly the same by the variable compressor sensor and the hardware inside.

I didn't pick where in they mounted them either forward or back. It my understanding they are forward so it has a streamlined access to the e brake cable and the mounting of the ebrake setup is easier.
With that set-up you can still have your E-Brake cables pointing forward with the calipers hanging off the rear.
Sorry I don't have a clear picture of the rear flex hose connecting to the hard line, but it's the same as the front flex hoses. You have a tab welded to the car....they meet there with a large clip to hold them in place.

Here are the rear 275/40/17 inch wheels. I loaded the suspension with just a floor jack. It will sit a little lower. I also have the spring set on the lowest mount point on the front mounts.

Besides what you see here, I'm using PTFE -8an fuel line from Pegasus Racing, and the appropriate connectors (90's, 45's and so on...)
The picture is the special 1/2" fuel line connector (Aeromotive 15128), the fuel filter (Aeromotive 12375), regulator with the large spring installed (Aeromotive 13134).
The regulator uses -10an ORB to male AN fittings. You can pick from -10an ORB to whatever male size you need.

Why did you buy the wood grain from a 73-74 ? What will you fill the seat belt light hole with ?
I bought it from Roseville Mopars. I used this year so I didn't have the small empty holes on the face since Dakota Digital doesn't have adjustment knobs.
I'll use the seatbelt light for those years to fill the spot.

This was the car I never got to finish so I'm not sure what to say, those could be switches my mechanic installed, I can't remember, I just assumed they were part of the DD kit ? :dunno:

I use Pegasus Racing PTFE fuel lines and in this case it's -8AN. You can see such a difference between the -8 and the -6
The hose is the 811 series and using the corresponding connectors.

Here are some more shots down the passenger side of the fuel line.
The line is 8AN from Pegasus Racing model 811.
I mouthed the fuel pump computer in the back near the front spring pocket. You can see it in one of the pictures. This keeps it out of the way and the fuel pump power leads that'll need to extend the shortest.

If you are using the factory power steering pump and need the high pressure fitting here is the fitting from two different suppliers.
The Bouchillon fitting is steel and cost $30
The Earl's fitting is steel and cost $10
Your best best is to buy the fitting above, some -6an fittings and some hose for high pressures line. Then use 3/8 rubber hose with a barbed -6an fitting on the end for the return. This assumes rack or steering box has AN fittings.

Aren't all Wilwood calipers 3/8" NPT? There's no flare inside of the caliper for your tubing flare to seal on and the tube nut threads are straight, not tapered.
Sorry, but unless these are different than my Wilwoods, that's not going to seal...

The kit so far is really nice from TTI. They don't provide the exhaust tip hanger trunk support plate. I'll need to source those. All my sheet metal under the car is new. Locating the proper spot is easy since there are indents already in the pan.

Did you request that the tips NOT be welded on ? :huh: Every system I've bought from TTI the tips were nicely welded in place....
I wouldn't drill the holes in the trunk floor based on the pan indents....I would align the exhaust tips in the cut-outs first then drill the holes for the hangers :alan2cents:

Alan, this is great advice and thank you very much. As for the tips being welded on from the factory... I wasn't offered this option and I bought direct (easy enough to do).
I use the indents and guides, I've never had one outside that area. Usually if its that far off I adjust the hanger on the pipe.

I converted a 72-4 handle, however someone was nice enough to loan me a 71 handle to copy. The mechanism is the same, it just changes where it bends thru the grill.
I've had them copied as well.

The camera angle is bad to shoot the lower hose. It looks tighter than it is, there not a lot of room but I was able to route it nicely without any rubbing or interference.
The Intercooler goes in next :)

Ken, my goal was the largest piece I could fit. Fortunately the cuda has a ton of room even with AC to mount a Intercooler. I've done many supercharged builds on different cars and this is the first I haven't had to modify the front end to fit it.
I created a mock up using cardboard and then sent the mock-up to http://www.autoradradiators.com

Alan you are spot on about how much goes into these cars financially. I've kept detailed records along the ways and it's amazing how much all the little things add up. Silly things you wouldn't think cost all that much end up costing hundreds.
