It's still a work in progress. There's a clean/paint bay, large work bay and a car/parts storage area.

Mine is still in progress.  I have a 34x34, with bathroom and loft.  I have a 15x24 paint and buff barn on the far side.

Much still to do, but it is coming along.

First picture is in the middle of winter 15 degrees outside, 55 degrees inside (I am in shorts and a t-shirt).
Second picture is the stack... self explanatory
last picture is the paint section, in process of finishing, and ventilation, draft system, etc.

Chuck, how big is your little slice of heaven?

Currently I have a 24x26 space with a 8x20 room off the side where I keep my cars.....  But we've been looking at property & when we buy the plan includes either buying a place with a shop or building a shop....  I also currently have a rental shop where I do business related work that I plan to bring home with me...   That shop is 24x50 & has a single roll up door on the short side.... Which means any time you want access to whats on the back wall you have to empty the shop.... PITA..  I want multiple doors so I can get out what I need without having to empty the building.....

No matter how big you go or how well you plan everything out. It's never big enough and there is always something you wished you did different. Build as big as you can afford. Then design and build it where you can add on if needed.  30x50x10 is a real nice size that's not overkill. My shop is 30x40 but I'm going to be adding on another 20x30 for dirty work and painting.

ksierens - Love the machine shop setup, I have some of the same items but nowhere to put them.

Hopefully within a year to year and a half I will have brand new digs w/ shop. As well, no more crawling under cars.

One of the properties we looked at had two small shops, one 30x32 & one 26x34....  And I knew i'd be building a third shop.... In one sense I like multiple small shops, one for the machine shop & office, one for cars & one for storage....

But if I build maybe 60x30 or 75x25 & build partitions it would simplify things...

Nothing crazy like some of the other awesome shops, but a 3-car with full power and air plumbed throughout the space. Also insulated and heated for the winter here in Colorado.

Built my car entirely in my little two car garage. It's decently stocked but a lift sure would be nice!

I did add HVAC to it this Summer, which was a game changer in the Texas heat!  :perfect10:

I have a pretty well rounded set of tools from the days I used to be a BMW Master Tech, 220v welder, 220v compressor, blast cabinet, drill press, good bench w/vise, mounted 8" grinder/wire wheel, stocked Grade 8 bolt bin, freezer w/Otterpops [another Summer must-have] and 20t press out in the shed.

I can't complain, but do look forward to expanding it some day. I would like to keep the Cuda in a safer storage place [safe from kids toys/bikes] and I need somewhere to work on my Warlock. I'm 30 with a <2 year old (so far), expanding the garage is a LOW priority.  :Thud:

Cody, now that you floored us with the pics of your place, the faithful are going to want to see in person first hand.

Total size is 40x118. But part of it is for the horses. So about 40x80 for the cars. The garage is now full and we have 6 cars outside. Ugh. I have the two work bays walled up, insulated and painted. They have a mini-spit HVAC system which is awesome. I plan to put in a 2 post lift in the big work bay and maybe some 4 post storage lifts in the storage area.

I wish we won the lottery... would have been a lot easier.  We're not rich so we had to do all the work ourselves.  But that allowed us to save a lot of money and I was even able to use recycled sign boards too.  Doing it our self allowed us to make sure we did not cut any corners, but in the end it took every spare minute of my life for nearly 3 years to get it done.  When I built the shop lumber was super cheap because nobody was building houses so there was not a lot of demand for framing materials.  I worked on it every single day after work and weekend....  every holiday, vacation and weekend was spent working on it.

With some simple tools, my bucket truck from work and help from friends we were able to do something that I can feel very proud of.  Rain or shine I would build a little each day.  There were a couple times I would be out there working on it until 3 or 4 am and still have to go to work in the morning.  Lots of people have more money then me and lots of people have a nicer cars then me, but I take a lot of pride doing things with my own hands and I feel great about what I was able to build.

A funny story...  The first day I started doing the mason block work I went at it really hard.  A super long day of laying block and mortar for the bar eating area and BBQ.  I had some cheap gloves on all day and could feel my fingers really stinging and in pain, but wanted to keep going.  When I finally stopped at the end of the day and took the gloves off I found that sand had gotten in my glove and right where my little pinky knuckle lines up with the next finger it had worn a hole through my skin down to the bone.  I now understand the term "working your fingers to the bone".  My bone on the finger next to my pinky was completely exposed.  I now have the scar to prove how hard it was to build the shop.

Man that doesn't exactly sound "funny" - it sounds painful!

Man, when you get on task you're some kind of a "machine!" Or maybe you were once a Marine? Those guys get sand in their gloves, boots, underwear and everywhere else, yet they keep on going like a Cody, ah, I mean a machine!

I can relate to Cody being anal and wanting it done right! When my buddy's and I built mine they let me work the circular saw for about 15 minutes. Now all them being in the construction trades and I  a CNC Machinist, I'm still looking on my decimal chart for a ""HEAVY HALF or LIGHT QUARTER""   WTF!!!!! After 15 minutes of bitching my one buddy grabs the saw and tells me to go use the nail gun and try not to nail my hand to the wall!!! :haha:

Wow, you guys have some really nice shops/garages. Cody, you are in a group all your own.

Mine, is not as nice as most and certainly smaller. It's 24'x30' with a vaulted ceiling. My last shop was 2500 sq. feet but only had 9' ceilings. This was not very good when it came to working under the lift as I could only raise the car about 4 feet so it was necessary to sit on a stool and roll under the car.
This time, I can raise the car up with the doors, hood and deck lid open without problem.

Anyway, here it is.

Here's the outside. The door on the right is the shop door. I only wanted a single door as I only plan to have one car to work on.

SoCal where dirt is tooooo expensive.

Gotta move one to get to the other.
Also built a small shed on the side with a mill, lathe, mig and tig welders.

Still get it done just not pretty.

I can beat that.....From the mid-80's until 2000 I did all my work at my parents house, they didn't have a shop or a garage, not even a carport.....I did everything in the backyard or driveway.
I got this car back from the body shop in Oct and did the complete assembly in the driveway in the Winter... :o

This is mine 20x25. Did everything myself, started last fall and finished closer to the end of winter then grass in the spring. Wouldn't have got it done nearly as fast if it wasn't for my 1 1/2 year old boy helping me. . But i loved every minute of it. Some long days and nights working a full day at work then coming home and working on this until I could no longer see.

So for the past year we've been looking at ranchettes, I'd love to find something in the .5-.8 acre range, big enough but not taking all my time for maintenance.... Found a few, somehow it hasn't worked out, recently we found a 1.1 acre piece of bare land, Well & Power on site, it was a home in the 50's-2000 time frame, the house has been leveled... I can buy it right, started looking at building.... Mostly looked promising but couldn't seem to get a straight answer from the county building dept about fees.... Most of the contractors I spoke to seemed to think it wasn't an issue.... Wound up talking to a neighbor who's brother had gone this route a few years ago....He called his brother Jim up & Jim took the time to come talk about the experience.....  Between interesting special fees....

Affordable Housing Fee     $17,986
School Mitigation Fee          $9,465
Traffic Mitigation               $10,358
Driveway Encroachment    $18,466
Septic Permit                     $5,427
Well Permit                        $1,650  Well is already there so this may not apply
Fire Sprinkler Permit           $1,225   Required since 2010  but wait till later to see where this goes
Tech Enhancement Fee            $48
Address Assignment                $75
Plan Administration Fee      $1,105
Green Building Fee               $655
Building Permit                  $6,575
Plan Check                        $3,355
Landscape Plan Check          $393

That's almost $77,000 & I haven't stuck a shoe in the dirt yet...

And then there's this... Remember that Fire Sprinkler Permit?.....   Well Since 2010 California has required Fire Sprinklers.... Honestly, if you live in town
& can connect to City Water it's probably a good idea though it does add to the cost of a new home.....
However if you live in the country & your water comes from a well.....  You can't support a sprinkler system that flows 200 GPM with a well that supplies 10 GPM

A 2000 sq ft home is required to have a water storage capacity sufficient to supply 200 GPM for 30 minutes..... Now if you have vaulted ceilings that goes up to 260 GPM for 30 minutes.. So about 7800 gallons.... Plus a isolated pump & plumbing....

Oh, wait.. You want a 1800 Sq Ft "Storage" building too?   Well those are a high fire risk so instead of .1 gallon of water per sq ft you need .2... And here's sloped roof so add 30%, Oh, it space isn't heated? Then you need a dry system, add 30%  So for your shop you'll need an additional 18,250 gallons.....

I haven't bothered to get prices for any of this since it all has to be approved as fire fighting equipment you know it won't be cheap...  I'm sure it'll be well past the $23,000 left to have $100K into the project without having bought a single part for the house of my choosing

Your Dream Home has now become a nightmare......   I gotta get outta California....

...
As you can see, I do a little Coca Cola collecting..........the truck on the wall worked out well for hauling my hardware!!  I got lucky several times.......

Randy those fees just floored me ... but the one that really knocked my socks off was the so-called "Affordable Housing Fee of $17,986". What the hell is that?? Kind of ironic calling that exorbitant fee the "Affordable Housing Fee"!! It just piles it on making it essentially "un-affordable"  :headbang:

I can beat that.....From the mid-80's until 2000 I did all my work at my parents house, they didn't have a shop or a garage, not even a carport.....I did everything in the backyard or driveway.
I got this car back from the body shop in Oct and did the complete assembly in the driveway in the Winter... :o

That's amazing!  :worship:

Now you know why I don't own here anymore.

Prop taxes, fees, special assessments, etc and don't get me started on Prop 13.

I may just beat Wild out of this state.  :haha:

That is why so many are leaving. Lived here for over 45 years and for the first time it is a serious consideration to leave.
When so much of the economy here in Cali is supported by so few. There is no win left...

Socialism.... ain't it grand!   You just " think" you actually own your property. And when the ones that still have money left leave..... who will they tax then?  California and Ontario have a lot in common unfortunately.

Yeah it's a great deal for those who got it but everyone else gets to foot the bill.

Another reason why I don't own anymore in Calif.

My favorite line from Brads article:

"In New York, California, Connecticut, Maryland and New Jersey, the top 1 percent pay a third or more of total income taxes. Now a handful of billionaires or even a single individual like Mr. Tepper can have a noticeable impact on state revenues and budgets."

The other problem in Calif and I suspect this is happening on the right coast is that things are getting so expensive that if you are middle class or upper middle class you are getting priced out. You need to be a RSU/ISO millionaire to live here comfortably otherwise whats the use.

One other nail in the Calif coffin is the lovely pension liabilities they decided to hand out are at 93k per person. Now most folks have less than 3k in the bank so you do the math.

Your Dream Home has now become a nightmare......   I gotta get outta California....

Local lumber yard was telling me a small builder of tract homes was at mid 90's K in fees per home before any dirt was touched.
Neighbors well went bad just had a new one drilled 17K did not include electrical. Oh ya California is considering putting water meters on private wells.
Hearing stories of new septic systems in the 35-40 K range. Where we live you can tell where the septic tanks are, they sit slightly above ground and are using pumps for some reason.

Thought prop 13 was necessary.

I had a 1400 sf addition built back in 2010. I must had paid over $20k for permit and school fees. Luckily they don't have an affordable housing fee at that time. I had to limit the size of the addition to avoid the fire sprinkler requirement. The water meter upgrade alone is $8k plus fees plus contractor installation, plus surcharge for a big meter that is a few hundred dollars a month. Also need to hired security company to monitor the fire sprinkler system alarm. They also got me with all the high energy efficiency features like lights, windows, insulation etc that cost me a bundle. At least these have payback in energy saving. They also got me with the sewer backwater valve that I need to install regardless if I am higher and uphill from the street manhole. All because the City has ongoing tree root problem of the aging sanitary piping system in the streets and they want to avoid being sue when system backup.

I lived in CA for close to 50 years and I still love it, even though it changed a lot the last twenty years. You do have to pay to stay.

I've added to my collection during some Black Friday sales.  The tin signs were 75% off at Hobby Lobby, the flags were on sale at www.flagsbydebbie.com, and the Cuda banner was on ebay.

@Convertcuda (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/convertcuda_50)  I think this is the thread you were looking for.  Lots of great photos of shops, garages and man caves.  If you are building a new shop this is a great thread to look over.

Guess I'll reboot this post as I have some new digs.

Here is the before images and I'll post as I have the after images. Right now I just replaced the roof, so next up is closed cell insulation and then epoxying the floor. Dang this stuff isn't cheap.

@HP_Cuda (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/hpcuda_20)
How many inch's of closed cell are you putting on the walls?
Usually 3".  I only mention this as in the past I have taken 2x4 and attached them to the horizontal struts between the poles.  Basically I created a wall with studs so that drywall or other things have something to attach to.  Stood them up vertical like standard studs and just screwed them to the horizontal metal attachment struts.
Even if you only put 2 studs between the poles, this will help in the future for hanging items or attaching finish's.  It's difficult to attach a work bench or any other items securely to the walls when the entire space between the poles are covered in 3" foam.   My two cents worth.

I'm looking to do 2" of closed cell foam which should still give me access to the studs. Right now I want to rip out whatever is in there (hokey) and put in some nice tables and cabinets. I'm also looking to wrap the metal before the foam goes on so I can easily change out any panel that gets damaged.

Trying to find contractors to do this is yet another challenge unto itself! Everyone apparently is "too busy".
