Hey All,
I'm working on installing my package tray and from looking at the pictures in the assembly manual it looks like the package tray should be flush with the trunk divider (the metal portion not the jute and press board) because of the clips that hold it down. Mine does not go flush. I'm thinking it needs to be trimmed to be flush. Is that correct? I'm also curious about those clips. They look like they will be visible after the seat back is installed. That can't be right. What can you guys tell me about this?
Thanks.
Kevin

It should slide under the back window/dutchman panel edge.
Sometimes you need to get it to tuck under there

Yeah, I had it tucked under and it still protrudes past the trunk divider. So it's sounding like some trimming is in order. Do you know anything about the clips? Thanks.

I have seen cars with and without them.
The top of the backrest holds the front of the package tray down, so I wouldn't doubt they were either dropped after a while or frequently 'forgotten'.
How far is your package track sticking beyond the metal? I've never needed to trim them so would be concerned you may create another problem.

So am I understanding you correctly, are you saying the seat back covers the forward portion of the package tray? My back seat is out being redone so I can't check it.

I'd say the package tray is 3/16 - 1/4 strong. Enough that the clips won't go on at all without being totally at the wrong angle.

Sorry, I don't have a picture of the rear seat backrest and it's contacted to the package tray at the moment. Maybe someone else does.
The backrest sits high enough for the package tray to fit/nestle under the top ridge, and no-doubt applies pressure backwards.

Thanks. I appreciate the help.

Does anybody else have any input or pictures they can share. I'd hate to trim this only to find like R/T's said that I've created some other problem.

I found the attached image on another thread: Package tray insulation panel.  Hopefully you can zoom in enough to get your answer?  Could you please post some pics once you get it figured out.  I'll need the same info someday.

@340Challman A few questions:

Can you post pics of the clips you reference? My 1970 original tray does have two spring clips. It was also lightly glued down.
What year is your car?
Original or aftermarket package tray?

@340Challman Yes if repop what brand of package tray are you using? I have one from REM new in the box, I could take a measurement for comparison if it would help.

EV2RTSE

Apparently there were two kinds of clips, those same clips that the door panels use, and then also the bracket type.

Here's a thread with some good info and more pics-

My car is a 1970 also. My original package tray was literally disintegrated. I don't think I had either style retainers with mine though. I am simply working off of the pictures in the assembly manual. Roseville sells package tray retainers exactly as shown in EV2RTSE's post, but not the spring (door panel) type. I'm using an aftermarket package tray purchased from Roseville, but is made by REM. In order for those clips to work, the tray has to be flush with the metal portion of the trunk divider because they screw in there. Mine is proud even after carefully slipping it under the dutchman panel. However, R/T's 4 said the seat back covers and holds down the package tray. So I'm just trying to determine if I need to trim mine or not and if I install those clips, will they be visible.

Here are some photos I just took of my 1970 SE. I hope they help!

P.S. I looked in the trunk and saw two of those spring clips ( like the ones for the door panels) protruding just in front of the speakers. Evidently my package tray came with those two clips.

Thanks for the pictures headejm. They do help. I think I'm going to trim the edge that tucks under the dutchman panel. If I take off just enough to get flush, I shouldn't have any problems.
