Console door fitment

I tried about 10 different adjustments and this is the best I could get my console door which is a reproduction to fit on my oem console that I just restored.

Should I just accept the areas where it's off as I either get it way off on one side and perfect on the other or it fits the way it does now where on one side it's a little off and on the other it's a little off.

Can it sit nicely in place if its not attached to the hinge? Seems like a new console door should fit better than that.

Those things are finicky to make perfect. A new hinge did the trick on mine. You can't see the problem looking at the hinge but that's it. I couldn't believe it myself. Nicest fitting console door I have ever seen.

 Here's mine with new hinge installed. It was fitting like your before hinge replacement. MoparDave can hook you up..

The hinge is the key.  I end up with a stack of used hinges and bending them to make them work.  A new hinge might be the best bet.  But you can try bending the old hinge if you have the tools too.

Hinge dosen't look too complicated, should be pretty easy to get it straight with a hammer or in a wise.

I found that working with the old hinge is harder than it seems. I worked with my old one and got it better. But never could seem to get it just right. Bought a new one and moved on. Fits like glove. Be sure and use the safety stop cable or you take the chance of overextending the new hinge.

That safety cable was only on early years, right?  I thought they stopped using it later?

Does your console have the seat belt holders or the ash tray in the back?

I agree with all the comments on the hinge. Many are sprung from being open and then leaned on or similar. Sometimes you can tweak the hinge, but a new one will take out all the frustrations.

@soundcontrol great thinking on taking off the hinge... it's a perfect fit so I think the hinge is the problem

If Shane Kelley finds it remotely difficult to work with the old hinge I'm going to pass and buy a brand new one.

I really appreciate you guys as you're so good at this and I need to post more because I waste a lot of time with stupid stuff that you guys just instantly know what the problem is.

The hinge looks perfectly straight so I would have never thought of that but obviously I need to try a new one.  I was up till 1:30 am this morning completely obsessed to get this right.

Happens to me all the time, and if I cant get it right, I can't sleep anyways....
Post a picture when you get it on straight, nice to see how much a new hinge can do. Mine is the same, and its cracked under also, might get a new door also.

Mine is the early style with seat belt holders. If they stopped using the cable no wonder there are so many jacked up hinges.

This is the cable I was referring to. I also noticed you can only overextend the door with the passenger seat moved forward and back folded down.

I wanted to add the cable to my original 73 Challenger console, but the console has no provisions to add it. Ashtray in back.
