Yep, missing that clip is the culprit! It's probably laying in my door somewhere.

Well, it lasted about 1 week without that clip!

Clips like that were used for a long time. I'm sure up into the 80s at least. They weren't model specific. If you have a salvage yard near by you should be able to find some.

Finally back!

OK guys, as you can see in the pic it appears that I am just missing the retainer. It was never there to begin with..maybe popped out...someone may have had the door apart before me. I checked the bottom of the door and couldn't see it.

I assume that any type of retaining clip will work, such as the one posted above. I went to 3 auto stores and I couldn't find anything, however. :(

Without the clip, it definitely will "pop" out given enough pressure (which I've done before). So I won't be putting this together without some sort of retainer on it.

Not sure what you mean by "retainer" . It appears you have all you need, but maybe it is just worn out? Once the clip is in the hole and you push the rod through, it should expand and not come back out. Look at these.

Yea, mine be a little worn, but they still require quite a bit of force to "pop" into the plate. I don't think that's the culprit according to the responses. The previous responders are saying I'm missin this:

The plastic piece you show is correct.  There isn't anything else that holds that clip in the hole.  If the clip is pulling out of the hole, then it's worn out.

Ah. Good to know! These I've seen at auto stores.
