Does anyone know if the rubber insulator which houses the upper steering column bearing is supposed to have a staple in it? Cuda Cody's recent video of a 1970 Challenger steering column rebuild suggests to remove the staple. However, during my rebuild, the package the bearing insulator came in stated "INSULATOR WITH GROUNDING STAPLE".

This kind of makes sense to me since the staple would connect the outer bearing race to the aluminum housing.  :notsure: Maybe someone knows or can provide more information on this.

Thanks KG

This is a good question.  I will go back and look at some photos to see if any originals ever came with a staple.  I've always wondered why the new ones came with a staple.   :notsure:   A ground would make sense, but when did they change that?  :dunno:  I think originals E-Bodies did not use a staple.  I wonder if it's a bearing that fit multiple columns and a different model needed it?

While this picture probably doesn't show what you need to see, I'm 95% certain, mine did not have a staple in the rubber insulator when I took it apart to put a new bearing in.

I can not find any original bearing sleeves with a staple in mine either.

Thanks...the mystery staple story continues :dunno:

Guys....The 1970 Challenger upper steering bearing staple mystery caper has been solved...at least in part. Just took apart my 70 challenger steering column and found the upper bearing insulator has a STAPLE!!!!! The replacement I purchased was advertised as a "Steering Column Upper Bearing with Grounding Staple"...See pics below of my old bearing/insulator with staple. Hope this helps anybody in the future with this question. Apparently you can never have too many grounds. :bigthumb:

:clapping:  Thanks for sharing!!!!  That's good to know.  No reasons not to leave the staple in it now.   :burnout:
