So I'd been planning on new wheels and tires for awhile, and a blowout on one last weekend hurried the decision up. 20 year old Firestone Firehawks with 25K miles.  I have 14 x 5.5 Magnum 500 with 215/70s, trim ring style.  I had a spare of the same size.

Decided to just go with the "ford" Magnum 500 chrome 15 x 7 and 235/60s front and 15 x 8 255/60s on back, I like them better than trim ring style.  Good old BG Goodrich Radial T/As.

Having had to use the spare tire just last weekend I wonder what everyone is doing for spare.  I don't want a spare 255/60 taking up precious space in the trunk.  My thought was just use one of the old 14" wheels and a match the diameter with the 255/60s with sure-grip in mind.  So planning on going with a 215/75/14 at 26.7" diameter vs 27" on the 255s.  Yeah I have AAA, but I'd prefer not getting stranded, most of my cruising is in the mountains of CO.

245/45/17 full size spare same as front. Back is 275. I need 17 inch rim to fit the front brake. I am not comfortable without a spare tire. CA roads are terrible.

I'm using a Ford aluminum donut spare from a Crown vic maybe? Not sure  , found it on the ground at a scrap yard.

I see Ford now offers a spare tire set up for late model Mustangs , part # FR3Z-1K007-C
This looks like it might work well if a wrecking yard search turns up empty?

Keep in mind with the Ford rims you will need to open up the center slightly .

I just searched for a mustang rim that clears brembo brakes and found this one? But not sure if this has a center cap or its cast that way( figuring one would need to open up the center?

Plug Kit & Compressor and then I have AAA. My rear tires are 28.5" tall and a proper height tire wont ever fit in the trunk.

Thanks for the links, good ideas.  I'm currently don't have a factory jack and I'm using a scissors jack from a '86 Dodge Colt I use to own, basically the jack shown in the kit you posted.

Spare? aahhhh AAA thats about it. Big tires on the rear. Smaller on the front... no room for all that. I suppose if I was doing some kind of road trip I'd scour the yard for "space saver" spares. I do have a plug kit, but thats not always the answer unfortunately.

I have a spare tire from a late-model Chrysler 300.

It takes up a ton of space, but it's a 17" rim and right in between the height of my front and rear tires.

Another vote for AAA.  Actually had to use them and they sent a tilt trailer truck to get it.   :ohyeah:

I never in my life had a flat. 40+ years of driving. So no spare here.
But since I'm writing about now, my wife said I jinxed it, and I will get a flat soon...

But in the mid 80's for some reason I blew starters and alternators by the dozen, I actually had spares in the trunk. 8)

Use a Ford space saver faked out to look like a Mopar space saver for looks
Would never ever use the stock Jack
AAA Is my go to instead also

Update: I went with an aluminum Mercury 16 x 4.5 aluminum spare wheel and 155/90/16 tires.  Only took a little time with a sanding wheel on the center bore to open it enough to fit.  Very light compared to the 15 x 8 road wheels and 255/60/15s.

More important, the new wheels and tires, stopped by a little car show at the Niwot Market parking lot last night.

Katfish

What car did you get that out of?

worthywads

98-02 Ford/Lincoln/Mercury not sure if there are more years, this is what the ebay add said.

Looks like the exact same as mine?

I have 235x60x14" wheels and tires on the car those work out to 25" height.

For spare i picked up a 15" doughnut spare from a U-pull it out of a 90's Dodge Mini-van for $12 and a scissors jack for $7.   Its height is like 24" so close enough for short mileage. Being from a Dodge the bolt pattern is correct and for the rear i had to widen the opening slightly with a grinder..   I rarely travel more than 30 miles from home, so in a pinch it will work.
