10% "buyer's commission??" 12% "buyer's commission" if you are not on site??  :Thud:

I dislike the greed, but I have to hand it to Dana Mecum for the empire that he built. When he entered the auction scene Barret-Jackson was the undisputed king of collector car auctions. But Dana had a plan. He undercut every commission and fee that the other auction companies were charging. Slowly, but surely, seller's started bringing their cars to him instead of the other guys. Mecum auctions grew and grew BIG. Now that Mecum dominates the auction scene, there is little to loose by adding on all the extra fees ... and a whole lot of $$$$$ to be made. So of course he's going to charge all those "buyer's" commissions ... until somebody else comes along and uses his own business model to dethrone him.  :takemymoney:

Cheers!

plus seller fees and $200 to register for the right to bid   :takemymoney: :takemymoney: :takemymoney:   At least the casinos give you free alcohol, here there is a special package for that.

It is impressive to watch, which is of course is part of the business model.

I think the rise of Mecum had a lot to do with Barret-Jackson making their prime time TV auctions "NO RESERVE" ....people weren't willing to gamble on the re-sale value of their quality cars.

When I started going to Mecum auctions in around 2007/2008 bidder registration was free though you had to give some financial information or bank letter to qualify.  Commission in 2011 when I bought a car was 6%. Spectator admission was around $10.
Best part, there were little bar kiosks in the bidder area with free beer, wine and snacks!  I thought there was probably a reason behind the generosity, some bidders might get juiced up and the next morning wake up and find they'd bought a car at the auction for far more than they'd intended to!
Then they started charging  to be a bidder, and raised spectator admission.  Introduced Gold bidder status when you had to pay $500 for the honor, only gold level bidders get the free booze and snacks.  Gold level bidding at least got you a season of auction registration, but now for 2022 you have to pay $500 per auction to be gold level.  No thanks I can buy my own beer.  And Spectator admission is now $30 unless thats been raised for 2022?

The Mecum family is probably well on their way to surpassing the Waltons and Warren Buffet on the richest Americans list!

Yeah, Mecum auctions are now custom tailored to cater to the big dogs with the big money. I get it, as from a business perspective if makes total "cents". What I didn't get was all of the shenanigans that go on at those auctions. A few years ago I was at MCACN and was at Tom's after party. I somehow found myself in a group conversation involving a number of the big dogs. They were talking and I was just listening, but the stuff about the fake bidding, shill bidding, chandelier bidding, seeded house bidders, short hammer sales, inflated reserves so on and so forth just blew my mind!! I guess I was naive but I had assumed that it was all pretty straight forward as described in the rules ... but it's not. It's a money making machine and like Vegas, the house always wins.
Cheers!

Amen to that brother. Found out the hard way myself. Was trying to buy at insurance auctions. What a scam.

How about a 1973 Cuda made to look like a 71 fetching over $96K  :o https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0122-486526/1973-plymouth-cuda/

and a real 71 only getting $58K https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0122-499239/1971-plymouth-cuda/  :crazytalk:

The 71 has a fender tag.  BS23H1B278315
Has a 6pak.

The BH23G3B597139 has lost it's identity. No tag. Not surprising.
It is surprising that it brought as much cash as it did.  Must have been made up real nice.

I can't get over some of the prices in this auction.  I see several mid ninety Ford trucks going for 20-30k   I had a couple ford trucks in that year range (90 & 96).  I did enjoy them and trucks hold value but that's nuts.   Literally 750k units built per year,  Nada high retail values of easily under 10k and you can find them everywhere.

Why would you pay 3 times more average value for something at an auction  :foul:

anlauto

All matters on what is trending those trucks are popular right now... :dunno:

...I don't get the guy that brought over two dozen Corvairs to the same auction...nothing like saturating your own market  :drunk:
