A66 code 1970 340 Challengers

  Would someone please ex plane to me why everybody disrespects the 383? I have and had A few of them and had good luck with them. The one in my grand coupe will set you back in the seat when you nail the go pedal. and it's been reliable. Supper-bee's and roadrunners came standard with them, and they were A bigger car.

Nah: I love 383's as well. I prefer a 383 in an E-body however a lot of people prefer the 340's.

for the '70 'cuda - the 340 was a No-Cost OPTION
for the '71 'cuda - the 340 was a $44.35 OPTION

for the '71 Challenger R/T - the 340 was a $44.35 OPTION

the $$ difference between the STANDARD 383HP & the 340 engine OPTION lies mainly in the 26" radiator/clutch fan & Chrysler Corp figured out how to squeeze a few $$ out of the available OPTION (for '71)

do you think "hi-impact" paint cost Chrysler more $$?

& the Paul Goldsmith road test 340 Challenger was a 318 car with an engine swap, as revealed in Popular Mechanics' "rival" publication Car Life, which put a color photo of the car on its December '69 cover

the road test took place on 9/15/69 & there wasn't a factory produced 340 Challenger available, YET

Nah: I love 383's as well. I prefer a 383 in an E-body however a lot of people prefer the 340's.

I too have also liked the HP 383. Owned both 70 and 71 versions in Challengers.
Nice torque and sounded great with the HP cam.
71 low compression version still made good power.

Thinking about your information regarding A66 production;
Sheldon's car must have been one of the earliest A66 cars produced. (September 28 SPD)
My A66 vert comes in at a close second (October 6th)
Sheldon's car was a flat hood, mine came with the RT hood.
I still wonder if there are any Challengers out there with the A66 code with an earlier SPD?

Ah. Mine was SBD in early November, so I'm no where near September! Still an early A66 car. Mine may have never had 340 decal and scat stickers installed...

also remember the SPD is "scheduled" the ACTUAL Production Date can be a week+ EARLY or a month+ LATE

it would be interesting to track when the die-cast "340 FOUR-BARREL" hood emblems appeared at each plant & if arrival of the bulge hood & installation of "V-8" emblems on the fenders were consistent

the earliest 340 Challengers I have info on are: Los Angeles SPD-926 & Hamtramck SPD-928 (EK2 'vert) 
& I know I have the info from a former owner of @RUNCHARGER 's car just hasn't made it to the spreadsheet, yet - his A66 was "scheduled" earlier on 928 than the above 'vert
I used to own a project LA assembled (SPD-B18) FC7 auto 340 Challenger, it got cut up to save a 440+6 R/T

@kawahonda FK5 "dark burnt orange metallic" was the 2nd most popular color after FC7 "plum crazy"  (#1) on the Challenger hardtop (JH23)
on a R/T hardtop (JS23) it was 3rd behind FC7 (#1) & EB5 "bright blue metallic" (#2), so I'm sure it was very popular/common on a A66 car.

IMO,  it would be safe to "assume" your car had hood decals on it when new
& there was no evidence of window bees on my November '69 LA A66 car

Some interesting points being made:
Early known A66 car's:    SPD, La built A66-9/26,   Hamtramck A66 9/28 and Sheldon's old car 9/28 w flat hood

My A66 vert SPD 10/6 w Rt hood, bumble stripe, 340 decals, 15" in wheels and bee in quarter windows. Hamtramck car.
As I disassembled my car, I checked date codes of parts:
Rt brake caliper bracket- 10/6
RT Lower control arm -10/1
K Frame -10/20
Radio Speaker- 10/20
Differential stencil date- Oct 22
These are some of the later October dates I found on my car.

Delivery Date- November 17, 1969 (I have some original paperwork and spoke to original owner who is now 82 years old.) He told me he ordered the car the last week of August, 1969.
Time Frame; car ordered in late August at North Plainfield Dodge, NJ, parts on car range from 8/28 to 10/22 w a delivery of 11/17/69.
They were still putting the car together in late October.

Looks like a little over 10 weeks from order to delivery!

Here's some pictures that we pulled off some slides that came with the car. It was delivered to him in Early November. My guess is that these pictures represent an "almost new" car, maybe 500 miles were put on it.

Notice no hood decal or scat stickers. Either he pulled them off, or they never came with them.
