i can tell you that by law , the dmv must keep a record of all titles issued.  they start with the "A" title for the first owner B for the second and so on. i went to my dmv office and with using just my "name " i got a complete history of all owners on record. you may try this to get the vin! there should be a record in your state. you may need to push them to look it up . it is there if they will look!!  good luck !

Wish I could help.  Its a beautiful car and not hard to tell how you felt about it.  It looks just like mine except mines got a 383, gator top and no side mouldings. JS23N

You said you bought one almost identical to it.  How far off is the one you bought from the one you had? 
I've had my car for 29 years.   I'd love to talk to the original owners of it just to hear some stories about it and to be able to show them that the car was resurrected and not dead in a field somewhere.  I bet they'd get a kick out of it.

I just wanted to say, use your name only to search the dmv records of vehicles registered in your name and you can "get the vin from there" .. i did it in my state. maybe you can in yours? i recovered my car after 27 years [stolen] and i learned a ton about the dmv! you may have to find someone who will care as much as you but, i think it can be done. let me know what happens. also , dont forget you can go back to your insurance company and they may have a record of insurance that shows your vin !!!

your police friend can get someone at the dmv to find this. you were the 2nd owner ? correct ? a record of titles starts with the   'A' title... 1st owner . 2nd owner is the "B" title ... dont let them tell you it is not there. it has been purged to from the active ncic to- the  ncib statistical  system.
they told me the same thing. i had to get a supervisor to do it and she  found all the old records back to 1971 !  also ,  did you ever get a speeding ticket in the car ? it will show up in the ncib system. i had a forensic expert with philly east task force prove to me the records are there... your city or county tax records will contain the vin too!  dont quit , this can be done.  i know, i have done this!!  i recovered mine -- stolen- 27 years ...

There is an insurance database, although I don't know who would have the authority to access it. There was a letter printed in Mopar Action years ago about a guy who was transporting a 68 Coronet, I think, without a VIN tag into Canada. The border agents were stumped by the SO number on the body, Ebooger explained to them the difference and they were actually able to search by SO number to determine the VIN. The records ARE out there, just not easy to get at.
