So I keep my eye out for originals but I had this crazy idea that maybe someone made repops that you could actually use in an emergency without putting yourself through the agony of knowing you just destroyed a piece of history.

Or  the fact that I can't find them anywhere probably means it's not economically practical for places like Cooper tire to pursue

Just pondering...

No repops of space savers.  And for the most part, other brand space savers from the era stick out like sore thumbs in the trunk of an E body.
Towing coverage on your classic car insurance policy is the best idea for dealing with the worry about flat tires!  :alan2cents:

This is " function-able"  but obviously not correct.  Ford aluminum space saver spare fits  RWD Lincoln, crown vic etc....
You do need to bore out the center to fit. Works great on my car.

I bought a Ford space-saver tire at a swap meet for $20 and it looks an awful like the oem one. Having said that, I run the car with a full size spare since I actually drive my old lump.  :alan2cents:
In the immortal words of Jimmy Scott- "pace yourself!"

yeah, part of me just thinks buying a cracked unusable old tire for mega bucks is stupid while the other part of me knows I'll probably do it. I was looking at Porsche space savers for a while but you're right that anything else is miles off.

I finally did the same thing after years on the to do list.  An great idea from  a cc.com poster

I wish I wasn't so particular about stuff on this car. I started out buying all "kinda looks the same" parts and now I find myself going back and buying the same parts all over again with the proper p/n's and even dates when I find them. At the end of all this I'll have enough spare parts for two more engine bays full of look alike parts  :looney:

Guess I was looking for unubtanium again... a repop with the herringbone tread and all the markings perfectly matching the original but at a price that won't make me cry.

So, now that that's been answered, I guess I'll continue to search for the real 70/71 F78 space saver and an owner of such a spare that would like to separate me from my money.
:takemymoney:

Maybe they'll have the proper jack as well...

On a side note I met the owner of an AAR a month or two ago who told me the original owner whom they bought it from, once walked several miles to a service station rather than using the space saver spare in order to preserve it. I don't know if I would have had that kind of foresight.

You have successfully made it easier to not do any real work for the rest of the day! :ebay: I looked at your link and immediately began distracting myself with what's currently out there.

I looked at this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Space-Saver-Spare-Tire-Wheel-1-B-F-Goodrich-G78-14-L9CU-426-Hemi-Mopar/311682038126?_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D41375%26meid%3De03aba5b746e4eb49df1cfb1dc73d679%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D332388161830&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851

... and I'd probably pay up if it were the F78. At G78 maybe I'll make him an offer  :dunno:

I did make an offer, admittedly too low on this one a while back...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mopar-BF-Goodrich-5-x-4-5-SPACE-SAVER-TIRE-Wheel-AAR-Hemi-GTO-Cuda-Challenger/112544808906?_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D41375%26meid%3De03aba5b746e4eb49df1cfb1dc73d679%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D332388161830&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851

... but it looked to be a similar bfg on an AMC wheel repainted black over what I imagine was originally orange.

Not a problem Mike, I've accepted my situation in my mind. I don't believe I will ever be able to get back to wrenching, at least not like I used to. I guess I was just cryin in my beer for a second. No harm done.   :handshake:  Thanks for keeping me busy.  This forum is my shop now.   :grouphug:
