Dropping into 2nd gear: What RPM range can I be at?

While I'm in 3rd gear, about 2,500 RPM; I try to down shift into 2nd and it won't go in smoothly.
At 2,000 RPM or less, it goes in easier.

Is my linkage needing to be adjusted? Or do the synchro's need to be replaced?

A good place to start would be to double check the linkage.  Do you know who rebuilt the trans?

I can't remember. Was a 340 back in 98'-00'

I have 80/90 wt oil  in it right now.

Should I change to ATF?
Would that help the gears mesh at a lower RPM?

IMO, check the linkage adjustment and correct if needed. Then dump the 80/90 and put in ATF4. Your synchros will love you for it.

IMO, check the linkage adjustment and correct if needed. Then dump the 80/90 and put in ATF4. Your synchros will love you for it.

It upshifts perfectly fine from 2nd to 3rd regardless of what RPM I'm at.

You will notice a huge difference in the downshifts, upshifts will be the same. I've had ATF in my 833 since 1985. When I bought it, it had ATF in it as well. Locally, nobody runs 80/90 in their 833.

I was having issues upshiting under hard acceleration with my fresh Brewer built 4 speed.  Just wasn't wanting to quite go all the way in. Dan from Brewers sent me some Redline MT 90 synthetic oil and made a huge difference in mine.  Another thing is to make sure your clutch is completely disengaging. Downshifts and reverse expose that issue with not completely disengaging.

Redline MT 90 is exactly what I used.

No problemo at all.

I have ATF-4 in the Cuda and had Redline in the Charger but it leaked.  I know of a couple more guys with redline that leaked too.  Redline is full synthetic and very thin compared to ATF-4, so just be aware it.
