What brand of oil do you use for your engine, engine with flat tappet?
Do you add some ZDDP in your oil?

I use Mobil One full Synthetic 15w-50.  They make a Flat Tappet oil just for our old cars.

Diesel engine oil  has zinc.

I used diesel oil for years with good results then about two years ago I tried Lucas musclecar oil with the Comp Cams additive and had a failure. I'm not blaming the oil but everything I have now is roller camshaft. I'm kind of 30 years behind the auto manufacturers I guess, I want everything roller and injected these days.

I just bought a flat tappet cam and lifters. After reading more a about oil recently I wish I had gone roller. I'll just have to be careful about using the right oil. Going to use Joe Gibbs for break in and for first normal change, this oil is recommend by this cam manufacturer. After that I'm haven't decided.

if you can find SJ best or SL rated oil it will work
Othrwise Racing oils Gibbs or Penn or high weight 20-50 will work
or use additives in the oil you use

Today I use Motul 300V 10w40 with zddp. any issue with this 300V.
But this subject is very complicated, not enough zinc or too much zinc can destroy the engine. Some friends here in France destroyed their camshaft.

And please, please do not start up a new engine like they do on T.V. Have fuel in the float bowls and fuel line, timing set correctly so it lights off in 1/4 turn. I cringe everytime these TV guys start up an engine with all the drama.

blown motor

I use Castrol GTX 10W30 with STP oil treatment. I don't know if that's right or wrong but so far it's working.

I've read diesel oil has been reformulated with lower zinc recently. In the link I posted, additive "prolong" seemed to work well, but keep in mind as he says not all additives work with all oils. He did have good results with prolong and the oils he added them to.

erik70rt

I put the Gibbs Hot Rod oil in my Barracuda over the weekend.  Supposedly formulated with higher zinc and additives for prolonged storage.

Contrary to the opinions of some, I am not dumber than I look.

chal340

Yes, I have read this too.
Add some additives are not recommended because in these additives, there is some "oil" and maybe this "oil" is not compatible.
I found this oil, http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/motor-oil/gasoline/premium-protection-10w-40-synthetic-motor-oil/
And I can buy it here in Europe.
We don't find all engine oil here in Europe, beacuse standards are differents.

I had a cam failure some years ago and since the rebuild I use regular old Amalie 10W30 with Comp Cams additive as it`s their cam in there now and no issues since.
