This was recommended by my engine rebuilder: Shell Rotella T 15W40 and 1/2 bottle(6 onz) Comp Cams Break In Additive.

I think for your first oil change for a new motor, that is a great combination  . . . But after breakin . . . I just want something effective and priced decent.   Many different choices out there . .
Drive it like you stole it . . . And they're CHASING you!

What brand of oil do you use for your engine, engine with flat tappet?
Do you add some ZDDP in your oil?
First of all are you talking oil for engine break in or just regular engine oil changes?  For break -in you definitely want to go with break in oil along with  comp cams break in oil additive.  After that, Mobil 1 15W50 like Cody recommended or Hemmings Classic car motor oil is what I recently bought.

I've been using Gibbs Driven conventional oil from Summit.

Yes, I speak about regular oil change.
For my engine I need 10 W40 and I found Amsoil in Europe.
http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/motor-oil/gasoline/premium-protection-10w-40-synthetic-motor-oil/. This is an oil for Flat Tappet too.

It's not possible for me to buy some oil in United States, Summit. Jegs... don't ship oil, it's forbidden.

And please, please do not start up a new engine like they do on T.V. Have fuel in the float bowls and fuel line, timing set correctly so it lights off in 1/4 turn. I cringe everytime these TV guys start up an engine with all the drama.

:iagree:  Grinding away at the starter, wiping lobes away as they go... Idiots... I haven't had to crank a new engine more than a couple turns in over thirty years... Do the work before you hit the key & expect it to be running practically immediately.....

So, is there a conclusion regarding an oil that will protect a flat tappet cam and that doesn't cost $12 a quart?  :popcorn:

For me, I'm going to use a specific oil for flat tappet with zinc and phosphore already inside and don't use an oil and add additives.
Like I read, oil company don't recommended to add "oil + additive" in their engine oils.

I use this oil because it's reasonably priced and accessible in my town.  California has a lot of regulations.

Oriellys or Napa carries it.  Not sure if they ship oil.

Just one opinion....

Cudamike

Summit ships Brad Penn oil. I found a distributor in my area that sells for 80 a case.

@chal340
@Cudamike

Are you happy with the Brad Penn as I've heard good things about it.

Thanks cudamike but @chal340 lives in France.  I was just trying to give another option.

Exactly , not hard to get an engine to fire immedialty if you do all the prep first

I use Mobil One full Synthetic 15w-50.  They make a Flat Tappet oil just for our old cars.

@Cuda Cody do you use this for break-in as well?  Do you add any break in additives?
