I was surprised last night to see a blue '71 Challenger 340 4 speed sell for only $28,000

Ya know what they say about 71 Challengers.... :haha:

? I don't know what they say, and who are they anyway? lol

No stripes and the wrong hood, I figured about 32k from the 1 pic. With buyer premium, maybe it would be near that. I'm a biased 71 owner though.

Inside joke,  :D Alan restored a beautiful FC7 '71 V code and it took a while and several price cuts to sell, and I have a real nice GK6 '71 V code I've had on the market for some time with little to no interest, so '71 Challengers don't seem too popular.  :dunno:
At any rate, if that B-J Challenger is solid, I'd think a nice 4 speed driver would be worth mid 30s.

Strong money for that re-body 'vert Challenger clone.

Maybe buyer was unaware of its sordid history.

Has wrong instrument cluster/switch panel too.  Unless it's a manual top.

So what's the deal was it a coup made into a vert?

If real vert why switch tags......sell it for what it is.....was

303 Mopar

Seems that Mopars are taking a hit across the board.  Custom Striker Cuda went for $155k, Superbirds for $120k, and only the never-ending line of Corvette's are doing well.  I think Mopars did better at Mecum and BJ apparently is a Chevy and Ford auction.

The Superbird looked like a bench seat auto 4bbl with radial tires so I doubt the overall quality was there....The fact that it is a six figure car is strong money
That custom Cuda for $155K is a lot of money for a custom car....once you modify a car it's not always easy to find someone that likes it as much as the builder/owner does....

Most of the good quality Mopars have given up on BJ because of their "no reserve" rule, that's why Mecum gets all the good cars. :alan2cents:

Good point, but 2 were $116 and $120, the Hellcat bird was $145, a restomod one was around $180. Only one nice blue one was in the range I would expect at $230.

Speaking of the hellbird, I took a pic of how low that Magnumforce k-member and oil pan are due to the added spacer for the supercharger to clear the hood.

And that's why the Mustang guys left BJ too

But if you want a Corvette BJ has hundreds

I watched for several hours and let the DVR cover some (I was in and out of the barn, working on projects).

My observations:

Mopars do not get the money they once did.  Mustang 350's and 500's get wild money.

Every other car is GD Corvette

I am NOT a fan of the older 32 Fords, or mid 40 Fords, or the way over customized cars.  Hell I did not really care for that over custom 71 Cuda...

I am getting old

I need a sandwich.

There were not enough Mopars to hold my attention.

Like Mecum, super nice , correct cars still get good money. Price of cars with "run of the mill" restorations has dropped.

I, too, was shocked at the money the restomods were getting; $200K, $300K, even more.  And a lot of them did seem to be Vettes.  What I don't understand is how they get to those prices as it's always been the axiom that you never get the money you put into a car back out of it, rare or highly desirable models excluded.  How does a custom corvette convertible get $300K and the Striker Cuda only $155K?  Both are over done (for my tastes) and of equal quality.

1badfish

I was there all week, seen enough Camaro's and Corvettes to do me for a while.  :Thud:

Only one TA at Russo and Steel and not one AAR or TA at BJ....craziness. And I was surprised how many of the nice mopars were column shift.

That 70 V-Code that went through last night for $57k seemed like an ok buy. Bench/ Column though.

anlauto

The resto-mods that were getting $200K-$300K likely cost $500K to build and there's a lot more GM fans in the world then Mopar fans so it stands to reason that a Corvette would bring more than a Cuda...

71 Cudas are a HOT ticket when it comes to restored muscle cars but not when somebody modifies the crap out of them :alan2cents:

BJ is kind of a flavour of the month deal. One year a drunken guy shows off by letting his kid bid on a Super Bee the next year some dude wants to show off to his trophy wife by paying too much for a 75 Corvette. All of these guys want to be on TV.

:iagree:  Very true; I saw the same thing last year.  Is wrong for me to aspire to be a drunk guy with a trophy wife and too much money?   :)
