For the second time in 35 years I've closed the shop for tomorrow.... stay warm my friends
They sent out an email at work today saying due to the extreme weather the next few days, discuss with your manager about working from home.
I have no access to the tools I use at work like CAD, outside of the office, nor do many of the engineers there. So tomorrow morning I will drag myself out in the -20 to -25F world, with -50 wind chills, to see if my car will start. And if so, drive 25 miles to the office. If I make it, I am guessing the place will be almost a ghost town except for some engineers.
Yesterday we had a big snowstorm and I was several hours late. Then another light snow hit to screw up my afternoon drive.
This really sucks.

Here in Tennessee we stay home with 2 inches of snow. There's alway ice under the snow. Can't even imagine how you all deal with these temps.
It's "Global Warming" I tell ya ! :verymad:
Monday I lived in my New Holland moving snow for 6 hours.. I was cold deaf and in a trance. They are talking 28 below w a 50 below wind chill ( ya I realize my Canadian friends are having a chuckle here) But I cannot risk the lives of my crew. There is no amount of money I could make to make it worth the risk. On the upside I was able to list my closing on 3 of the 4 local TV stations, hell I thought free advertising. Ya global warming my azz
Aar1064, I just noticed you are in Ashland city. That's where we want to move in two years. We are sort of checking out that whole area west of Nashville including Pegram.
Yeah I don't know how folks handle those extreme temps. I like the change of seasons and even some cold but 15-20 degrees is about my limit.
Below zero lows is not unusual here winters, but below zero highs are very rare. And tomorrow they forecast something like -14 for a high! That will be a record.
We had about 6" of snow overnight Sunday into Monday morning. It takes them a while to get everything cleaned up after an overnight snow. And complicated by the low temps, which makes the huge amount of salt they dump on the streets less effective. So all in all, there is risk of slippery areas or "black ice" regardless of all the salt.
The streets were very wet today with all the salt, which adds another level to the misery. When you drive, salt spray coats your windshield, and with it so cold, your windshield washer fluid most likely will be froze, so even if you try to run your wipers, it just smears the salt. Drive toward the sun, and you can't see in front of you!
The record low in Chicago is -27. I was around 20 yo then living at my parents when that happened, but now 30 plus years later I'm in no mood to see that record possibly broken! :o
Oh, forgot to mention, the high winds are not only causing outrageous wind chills, they are blowing snow out into the roads, where it's too cold for the salt to melt.
Ya Canadian or not at -25C I don't work outside much. Don't blame you at all Bigs! I stay inside and feed the woodstove!

We're fahrenheit here, I looked up a conversion program and -25F is -31C.
Just had the dogs out... hope I dont need to sit to pee
Postman on the news said he had 3 sets of thermals on.
Do Dogs wear thermals there too? :haha:
Yeah, we're in a cold snap right now, and it's gotten so bad that the wife insisted that I go out and bring in the brass monkey! Makes me think of my late Dad; he used to say "it's colder than a whore's heart!" LOL, Jimmy always did have a flair for a phrase. One bright spot though, you don't need to put the beer in the 'fridge to get 'em cold!
my dad would say '' colder that a hooker's heart" :haha:

35 F here in South Carolina this morning at 5:00 am. It is up to 45 and sunny here now. Now I remember why I moved South. 10 F back in PA.

It's gonna be 74* here in Palm Springs, working on the car with the garage open.
I paid my dues, 40 years in Canada, shoveling, scraping, watching the city snow plow pile up my freshly cleaned driveway and starting over.
To put it into perspective. Last night my cousin in Wisconsin noted that there was 111 degree difference from inside their home to the outside...
I was watching the news and a man went outside in Chicago and threw a glass of water into the air. It froze immediately and floated away as mist. :unbelievable:
-35*C they are calling for tonight(about the same in fahrenheit) . I'm in north western Ontario and we get a several days each winter like this. Plug the vehicle in..no problems...other than the seat being really hard. If you don't have a block heater....you are probably screwed. :bricks:
 Maybe the USA should consider securing the Norther boarder from Arctic blasts with these...
Jim
School teacher here, we announced yesterday early afternoon that we were closing for today and tomorrow, here in NW Ohio.
With wind chills, we're reaching temps of -30 plus. I was just outside for a matter of 15 seconds and could not believe how cold it is, especially when that wind hits you.
What's really crazy is that they're calling for temps in the high 30's on Saturday, then high 40's for Sunday, then into the 50's on Monday...before going back into the upper 30's.
An 80 to 90 degree temperature swing in the matter of 3 days or so....nuts.

I can remember in 1978 blizzard 4 feet of snow thinking yahoo finally a snow day! Nope got driven to school ( that was still open) via snowmobile! ::) I can't remember the schools even being closed and getting a snow day. LOL! I remember one day up in Bruce County when I was going out to high school and it was 27 below zero F! If you spat on the ground, it went "snap" and my old 58 Dodge just went "row row row". "Too bad bucky, said the old man; schools on, best get walking the 1.5 miles to it!" And I did. I'm no hero, but what we're seeing these days is ridiculous. Say, where's AL Gore these days, eh? ;)
It hit -4 here, They closed the school! ::) the nanny state going strong in New York state. I remember going to school when it was -20f.
Waiting for Chris to open.
I can't ever remember the schools closing, snow, -40 or not. They bused us if it was 3 miles or further to school. You guessed it I lived 2.75 miles from school. When it was colder than -20 my mother would give me bus fare to take the city bus, other than that you toughed it out. That's why our generation built shit and got stuff done after we graduated. Didn't have a phone to call mommy if you had a tummy ache either.
Same for me just inside the bus range so I had to walk , no bus fare or rides from my parents ever , delivered papers in it too .
Had enough & moved south , paid my dues !
When should I call you Sheldon ?
I remember as a kid (loooong ago) schools NEVER closed around here. I trudged thru snow up to my waist (and I was a tall kid).
I took a ride to the shop yesterday afternoon just to check on things. It was -12 but factoring wind it was -gazillion. I was happy tho.... burned was running, no frozen pipes. Maybe 35 in the shop tho. About 60 at the sales counter.
This morning -23 without the wind factor. Currently -13 and windy. Winds are supposed to die about noon. So were open at 1PM today.
I tried to figure out a way to make up for some lost revenue. Any of you in sales or your own shop can relate I'm sure. So here's what I did.... I got the shop's name on 3 of the 4 local TV stations. Some of which also own local radio stations. I could not afford to buy this kind of advertising. We've been on the crawlers at least once an hour! And over the airwaves on at least 6 radio stations..... BIGS you dog... :burnout:

Ya, I'm with Brad. I walked to school (uphill both ways...). I don't remember ever getting a snow day or a too cold day. Rural schools sometimes closed because it is entirely a bussed in population and the roads aren't plowed yet. However, this is the first year I ever heard of closing schools because of temperature. Twice they closed because of colder than -30*. Today was -34* at breakfast time and the schools are open.
Agree as well growing up in Wisconsin. Dressed like the "Michelin Man" walking there.
The times being noted were also when vehicles were not electronic and less reliabl than now.
I have to give a shout out to Duluth Trading Company for making be not care too much about the outside temperature or the wind. I was out snowblowing and shoveling a good bit of the afternoon. Their lined pants and storm jacket or whatever the heck they call it kept me toasty. I definitely wasn't that well-equipped as a kid, except I do kinda miss those clips on elastic in my coat sleeves to keep me from losing my gloves.
:iagree: The right clothes make all the difference!
It warmed up to the tropical temperature of -15C here today. Almost felt balmy ........It's that -20C and beyond that gets me grumpy....
I have a hospital job. We never close. Ever. So off to work i go every day. Yesterday at 6:30 it was -23F on the way in. The wind was making it much worse. On the way out it was a balmy -12F. Today at 6:30am I saw -30F on the way into work. It was a breeze getting my truck started this afternoon at -6F.
I take this weather serious. It can put the hurt on a person real quick. I get worried about a flat tire, or some stupid thing that could strand me. I react horribly to the cold. My feet freeze instantly, as well as my fingers. It can cause serious problems pretty quickly if you are exposed. I feel this weather is more of an emergency than tornadoes to a greater number of people. Some day I will be like Chryco and move south where the only way my feet will get cold is if I step on an ice cube that I dropped trying to get it into my drink.
Stay warm and safe people.
It was interesting going to work yesterday, the world was pretty much devoid of people like a nuetron bomb went off! Hardly any traffic, most businesses were closed, and I got to park in the front row in the parking garage. I'd say 75% of the employees at my work weren't there.
Today, the temperatures were similar when I got up, around -21, but more traffic and many more people made it in to work. I was wondering, if everyone had to hunker down Wednesday, why with similar weather were so many more out and about today?
My main worry was about my house. Would the boiler break? Pipes freeze? As it turned out, no problem. I heard some people at work had frozen pipes though.
All in all, the cold snap was over rated, hyped up by the media. I'm more inconvenienced by snow!
Jordan, one of the first things my old man taught me when I reached driving age, was to be prepared for winter, and that meant a toque, pair of mitts, a warm blanket, pair of jumper cables, aluminum grain shovel, chunk of tow chain and a gallon can of gas where things you ALWAYS carried in winter. A small vessel of medicinal-purposes only whisky was a valid addition as well, and you ALWAYS stopped and enquired on the well being of anyone stopped on the side of the road. If the old Bruce County ways were followed today, you wouldn't feel so concerned about a breakdown. Be safe and warm!
Yes: I always carried survival items when traveling all over the province for work. I remember one time an equipment salesman had his vehicle break down in the cold weather (on one of the highways I traveled to work) and no one came by right away. He set the spare tire on fire to keep warm, that's the sort of stuff you do to survive.
I always snowmobiled so it was a natural to keep my snowmobile gear in the pickup at all times in the winter.
I'm curious about what you's guys spend for utilities up North
One of the good things I perceive about livin Down South is our lower cost of living.
I wonder what the difference is in what we pay in energy/utilities. My 3,000SF home is older, built in '73 prior to the energy crisis's that inspired a lot of changes to construction to reduce power consumption yet my power bills seem reasonable. My highest bill this season was last month with total Electric of $99 & Gas of $164, I anticipate this month will be somewhat higher. My highest bills are always in the winter with the highest summer month last year Electric $209 & Gas $9. There's plenty of months that total power cost is closer to $100.
This might help some of the northerners that want to migrate south make a decision. LOL
I live in a century old frame farm house. It's been renovated and insulated but you still don't get them as tight as a new build. Last month my propane bill was $285, about $215 US, for heat, hot water and clothes dryer. I buy propane with a farm group so we get a much better price than an individual consumer.
I live in a 15 year old 2340 sq/ft home in a subdivision lot size 40' X 116' . Georgetown Ontario Canada
The average for the last six months... Hydro/water $342/month , Natural Gas $184/month, property tax $445/month, Cable/telephone/internet $272/month :'(

I'm about 100 a month on electric in the worst months.
About 200 in gas in the worst months.
I've only stopped work on home building two days due to weather.
One day was 80 mph winds and we couldn't stand up. Our portopotty was blown 150 yards down hill.
The other time was negative 125 windchill. negative 79 degrees. small town of Jefferson next to tarryall lake. It broke my thermometer. we left after lunch since the guys were complaining. I had 7 layers of clothes on and it still cut through that.
It was 50 today in Salida Colorado. 7000 ft elevation. I love living here. Even with the cold. It's not too bad. Just bundle up.
this country is raising little wussies now. We're gonna have a hell of a time if the other big two countries ever try to come here and take us over. This latest generation won't know what to do.

This was the other morning :barf: I've spent the last week and a bit doing nothing but starting equipment for customers because in the fall when I said let's spend a day checking block heaters they just looked at me like I had two heads. It sucked. I hate the cold. Retirement (in 28 years) with or without my wife I'm heading to Texas.
