Hello everyone,

My husband and I are restoring a 1974 Barracuda 318.  It's about 95 % finished. The date on the engine says 2 14 67, so it's not the original engine anymore.  But what is the meaning of the other numbers on the engine?  One says 2539030  318-8 (don't have picture of it because engine is in the car)and the other one you can see on the picture.

Thank you and have a nice weekend

more questions than answers  :huh:

2*14*67 would be the block casting date (Tuesday 2/14/67)  :takealook:  got a picture?
2539030 318-8 (should be 2536030 ??) 318 block casting number

P = 1979 model year (1968 model year would be "D")
M = Mound Rd. engine assembly plant (Detroit, MI)
318 = cu.in. displacement
R = regular fuel

2334 = assembly date Monday 12/18/67 (doesn't make sense for a '79 model year engine, if it was 6334 it would be Thursday 11/30/78)
0558 = engine unit sequence number

this pictures shows the date right?  So, why does the other number says 1979?  That doesn't make sense.

I don't have any 318 examples to look at, but at this point I would "assume" that the format was different pre-1970
looks like it is a 1967 cast and assembled 318 for the 1968 model year which would NOT have a VIN number stamped on it.

for the '68 model year "PM318" must simply decode as "plant Mound Rd. 318" or similar
