The original slats in three of four AC vents in my 1970 Challenger are no bueno, so I got a dash panel insert with vents from a 71-74 B-body to swap the vents with.
I've managed to push out the outer pins holding the vents in place, but I'm worried about breaking something by messing around too much with the middle pin for the two middle vents

Can anyone advice me on how to do this?

The vents should be able to be removed with that center pin still in place. As long as you have the outer pins and tensioning clips removed, the vents should be able to be tilted outwards, starting from the side with the pin removed, and carefully slid out of the housing.

The center pin can be removed if you really need to, by carefully prying up on those two small pins that secure the bracket. When you go to reinstall it just use a little black ABS cement to secure everything.

The '70 vents have a slightly wider chrome edge than the '71-'74s. If you want to keep & repair your originals I found this thread to be really helpful- it also shows how you can repair that broken flapper control rod holder on your passenger vent housing if you want to.
