im new to the site

i have a 71 cuda im trying to switch over to power steering , the problem is im having a hard time with the price of the ps columns that need all kinda work , i did restore the manual column i have 1year ago, an i was wondering if i just changed the shaft on my column it would work . do you know anyone that sells just the shaft ?

now 2nd quuestion is im a short leg guy , id like to shorten up the column comming from the dash out , heres what i was thinking cutting 2 or 3 inch out of the crush can , bring to a pro machine shop , weld it back together . or someone told me b and a bodies use a shorter one . i have a rimblow an kinda dont wanna lose it . is any of this possable

i orded the firm feel ps box level 2 , an pump . now only waiting for a ps column or shaft an dont know where to find one , an like to shorten up the can too while im at it . any help would be great , thank you

Welcome @johnnydoe    :welcome:  Thanks for joining us.  I think I have a few ideas for you.  before you cut up a crush can, have you looked to see if using a stock Tuff Wheel adapter will work?  That might give you the space you need and you could always put it back to stock if you don't like it.

As for the steering column shaft, @Burdar just did a some adjustments to one.  There are plastic pins that are injected in there to allow them to collapse in an accident.  Since the Manual shaft is longer then the Power Steering shaft, you might be able to collapse it and then re-glue or pin it.  That would save you having to buy a used shaft.

You're going to be happy with the Firm Feel box!

hi cody , i dont wanna mess with the shaft , id rather just find a shaft , the can you showed me ive been looking at but no one can give me a deff ancer on if it works with a rim blow and if it will fit on an ebody column

Cuda Cody

I will check and see what I have for extra shafts.  If I have an extra PS shaft maybe we can trade?

As for the Tuff Wheels adapter, didn't later year E-Bodies come with that wheel as an option from the factory?   :notsure:  When I look the part number up in the parts book, it does not list it for an E-Body (1970 and 1971).

I'll ask Doug and see if he knows...

Just gotta love spell check sometimes.  :bricks: :Thud:

:welcome: Good questions to start with too. A rim-blow will Bolt right on the Tuff adapter and the adapter is clocked the same as the E-Body steering wheel shaft. Guys make that change a lot to gain more clearance from them to the wheel. I can send a picture of a wheel sitting on the adapter it you want. Again, welcome to a great new site.

I didn't quite understand what u ment when you said , " rim-blow will llot right on the Tuff adapter and the adapter is clocked the same as the E-Body steering wheel" might have been a typo

Cudajason

my experience has been that the crush can will fit the tuff wheel and a standard wheel, so my guess would be the "tuff adaptor" would also fit the rimblow, unless they mount very differently.

If you want to try an chop up a crush can, I could be convinced to part with one!

I can post some pics of the crush cans I have if you are interested.

Thanks 71grancoup that was great news, now  hopefully Cody has a ps shaft or I can find one

Doug (The Steering Wheel Guy)  :worship:   said this:

yes either can will fit on an E-body steering column and any std wood grain wheel, rim blow wheel, black "Deputy" wheel or Tuff wheel will fit on them ... even though you couldn't get a Tuff wheel in an E-body from the factory...

Here are some pictures showing the differences and similarities between the 2 mounting cans.

These are photos from Doug:

I have a PS shaft...  the threads on the end are not great, but the pins are good and it's usable.
