so I want to paint my steering column . What can I use because I don't have a spray gun or the right suede paint.
Is there a spray can paint that comes close to the black suede finish ?

SEM trim black, After bare metal is treated with SEM etching primer (black).  Give the final coat a dusting from about a foot away to give it texture. Of coarse powder coating is the best way to go, and they do have a textured black.   :alan2cents:

Yes, rattle can paints will hold up really well inside the car.  You can do a really nice job with a rattle can (if you don't have a paint gun).

I did my steering column with rattle can 'semi-gloss' black. While it does not have the original texture, it looks really good to me.
I did it 25 years ago and still looks good.
If you have the time or inclination to send it away, Mike at BE&A does an amazing powder coating job on them. No idea what his pricing is like but would assume that a top end finish would command a top end price.

Just to be clear, 70-72? used a textured paint.  73-74 did not.  SEM is a perfect match to the original finish on a 73-74.

My 68 Dart uses the same textured paint as the 70-72 E-bodies.  For that car I used a Rustoleum "fine" textured paint.  I'd have to look at the can when I get home to get the exact name of it.  I know they have a heavy texture and a fine texture.  I think my dash and steering column turned out great.  If anything the Rustoleum is a little too textured.  I ended up sprayed a non textured paint over the top of the texture to dull it down slightly.  It would have worked fine as is, but I was worried about it being difficult to dust.

:iagree: and to add...even the 70's aren't "textured" as many restored columns are... judge by your own column I say... :alan2cents:

Maybe I didn't prep the metal as well as I thought, but I used the SEM etching primer and then painted with SEM Trim Black and while reassembling I had a few large flakes of paint chipped off, primer and paint, down to bare metal.

I ended up redoing the whole thing with 2 part epoxy primer and an old spray gun.  I still used the rattle Can Trim Black to finish, no suede.

anlauto

I never use primer on bare metal parts like that... :alan2cents:

@Burdar Sir did you ever find the name of that Rustoleum paint you used?

No, I don't believe Organisol was ever used on the dash or column. My 1970 Challenger came from the factory painted with "Jewel Black" with a "suede" component added that adds a texture to it. Cody has a great video in the Resources section that talks all about the suede paint and the process for applying it. Check it out!
