Hemi Challenger RT "pilot car" was created for the 1971 model year. This EL5 Butterscotch beauty
I don't have the VIN for this car even though it is right there in front of me in the picture. The blow up of the fender tag on the display board is tantalizingly close to being legible, but I just can't make it out. If I relax my eyes, it almost looks like "100134?" That's my guess - can anyone see that better than me?

As for the Butterscotch Challenger, it obviously has a lot of plus-factors going for it - it's a Challenger, Hemi, Shaker, leather interior, etc. But one thing I really like on it is are the wheels. Body-colored "steelies" with the prerequisite "dog-dish" hubcaps AND the polished beauty rings - I really like that look! How would that be coded on a buildsheet - having the beauty rings added that is??

A '71 only thing? I like it a lot. To me it's a big improvement over the plain "steelies" with hubcaps. Without the trim rings and depending on the body color, its too much color on the wheels for me. With the hubcaps and trim rings you get a touch of body color on the wheels that nicely complements the color on the body. I like it a lot.

yes, it appears the OPTIONAL W12 was 1971 ONLY, but it was the STANDARD (un-coded) set-up on a '70 T/A Challenger

& besides the "PILOT" HEMI R/T the OPTION used black wheels exclusively

Black only? The hubcap and trim ring wheels didn't switch over from body color to black mid-year like the straight "steelies" did??

It's hard for me to make out, but on the bottom of the right hand display placard, does it say "sold by the Chrysler corp at the ???? 1974 Chrysler auction" (or something to that effect?)?? So if I am reading that correctly, this particular car was retained by Chrysler after it's duty as a pilot car, stashed somewhere on company grounds and then sold 3-4 years later as excess at a company auction in 1974??

Sold by the Chrysler Corp. at the mid 1971 Chrysler auction. Sold to Shamski Dodge in Ionia, Michigan.
Restored in December of 1983.

there are persistent rumors that "TRANS AM" cars used the brushed trim rings, but I haven't seen any b'cast sheets as proof to back that up

FWIW I know a guy here in town who's owned his T/A since around 74, an original 450 wheel car & it had brushed rings when he got it....

I also know of an original owner T/A in a nearby town also a 450 wheel car & also wears it's original brushed trim rings...
