I have a '71 Charger R/T in GY3 Citron Yella that was ordered as a Canadian (Y07) dealership demo (Y13) for Crosstown Motors in Edmonton, Alberta. My friend I bought it off of knows the high performance manager back then who remembers ordering it. They loaded it pretty well with options to showcase the new Charger apparently.

Just the thought that a car was ordered by a dealership as a demo makes the car special.
Some unusual combinations out there on the Y13 cars.
Really a small number of cars produced or even still out there.
Moulin Rouge Satellite convertible with white and sent to Canada.  Very cool combination and history.
Just my opinion.  8)

I don't think being a Y13 - "dealer demo" is necessarily a positive thing.  I'd rather have a one owner - well optioned car, than a dealer demo that was probably driven hard? by a number of people with no financial interest in the car early in its life.

1970 Y05 USA spec'd dealer demos:
~685 * 'cuda hardtop BS23 (~4.1%)
~  27 * 'cuda convertible BS27 (~5.0%)
~711 * Challenger R/T hardtop JS23 (~5.2%)
~  64 * Challenger R/T convertible JS27 (~6.7%)
~490 * Challenger R/T SE formal hardtop JS29 (~13.1%)

~5.5% (~1,977) of the badged performance E-bodies (~35,622) started life as a "dealer demo"

as the price goes up, the frequency of being ordered as a "demo" increased, the Challenger R/T SE number is shocking  :unbelievable: that's almost 1 out of every 7 built!!

1970 Y05 USA spec'd dealer demos:
~ 9 * Satellite convertible RH27 (~1.6% of 592)
1970 Y05 USA spec'd FM3 - "moulin rouge":
~ 2 * Satellite convertible RH27 (~0.3% of 592)

with 701 total (an additional 109) Satellite convertibles built for '70 the odds for the survival of another in FM3 are SLIM!!

Did the dealers order them ?

Couldn't EVERY car ordered by a dealer for their lot, that was NOT a "sold" car be considered a Dealer demo ?

Lets ask....Why would a dealer order 5 Satellites for his lot.....and then order one pink convertible, and order it as a "dealer demo" ?

To me it would make more sense if Chrysler put together the dealer demo orders, then sent them to different dealerships for them to display  :dunno:

I don't really know anything about this stuff...I'm just pissing in the dark :looney:

I know at our local dealer that the salesmen that had been there for awhile got to order a demo and drive it until it sold. I imagine the Manager limited what they could order to keep costs in line and I suspect they didn't want all the salesmen to order a 2 door Satellite either. I remember a few times the salesman would like the car so much he would buy it from the dealership.
I too believe there was probably a financial implication of ordering as a demo as well. Perhaps a better wholesale price or perhaps Chrysler didn't have to be paid until the car sold retail.
These days there aren't that many left alive that were in the biz back then to tell us how it worked.

yes, the dealers ordered their own "demo" cars, based on their knowledge of their customer base & what they would be interested in purchasing

quantity of "demos" was determined by Chrysler based on pass sale numbers & I believe payment for these specific Y13 cars was delayed, so technically they were still Chrysler Corp.'s and used as joint advertisement for a given time period

for 1970 US there were over 6,000 US Dodge & Plymouth franchises, the ~1,977 Y13 cars translates to less than 1 in 3 dealerships had a performance E-body "dealer demo" (& some had more than one)

I began ordering vehicles in the mid 70s and checking off Y13 then was more for the dealer sake then anything else. A Manager or Dealer Principal my want a special combination & not want it sold prior to it's arrival and a opportunity to drive it. Priority for builds on each model line would be- Sold, Demo then a standard stock order that wouldn't require a code checked. I once ordered a fully loaded 1980 Córdoba LS, 360 with T Tops, Dealer Demo, and it arrived in western Canada in less than 3 weeks.

Any chance there is a way to find out those numbers for a '71 Charger R/T? :)
