Title: Severe weather season is here
Post by: Burdar on March 06, 2017, 06:50:26 PM
I'm always paranoid about tornados and severe weather. The sirens just went off and we are in the basement. Tornado warning about 5 miles north and another 20 miles south. At least we have a basement. I'd never be comfortable living in an area that doesn't have them.

Wind is really picking up.

Ya that would freak me out, I'll take the snow and cold over tornadoes any day.
Stay safe!  :fingerscrossed:

That's scary.   :o  Can only image how uncomfortable that must be.  Stay safe my friend and let us know when it passes.

Back in 2011, 100mph straight line winds blew through. The wind was so loud we couldn't even hear the sirens. I woke up when I heard a big wind gust and saw a lot of lightening. I ran upstairs, grabbed the kid and got to the basement. That storm destroyed my 6' privacy fence and tore off a lot of shingles on the house. The ceiling a started leaking in about 5 places.

A town 10 miles away got hit pretty bad in that storm. 90% of the trees in town were split off half way up. 100mph winds for 20 minutes straight will do a lot of damage.

We are going back upstairs. It blew through really fast.

Here in Alabama, its the norm, I had one to go through my sub-division several years back, it was about a 100 yards from my house. I lost a bird house my neighbors wasn't so lucky. Guess what, after that happened I built a storm pit. 10" poured concrete and re bar, will hold up to 20 people. Better to have one and not need it than to need one and not have it

They are saying 70-90mph winds reported near here. It didn't get that bad at the house.

When you hear of a lot of fatalities, it's usually in an area of the country where the ground is too wet or too rocky to make a basement feasible. A tornado will strip a floor deck clean. Taking shelter in a bathtub won't do much for you in those situations.

My dad built the house I grew up in. The stoop was excavated and a concrete cap poured over it. We used it as a cellar. When bad weather hit, it was the perfect storm shelter.

Glad everything worked out for you.

A few years back I was visiting family in SW Michigan and had a tornado pass just 3 miles to the south of their place. Sirens were loud as heck and the wind was kicking like no tomorrow.

Oh yeah and the hail was insane too.

Glad you are all safe.

There was one time in Ft. Campbell Ky. where I was stationed 81'-83'.
We went into a Tornado warning early in the morning.

I was in formation for head count of the platoons.
I vividly remember the horizon.

The most evil looking I ever saw.
This greyish green massive blob of angry energy overhead looking like God's wrath was about to evoke upon us.
The air was nothing like I had felt before.

A Tornado touched down but it  was 20 miles away that day.

When I first moved to Detroit, my very first night there, the wind picked up and the sirens went off. I turned on the TV to get a map of where the trouble was. Now, I'm from Virginia, and in Virginia most of the county boundaries are determined by rivers and creeks. Because of this, each county has a unique shape. In Michigan, on the other hand, the counties are all rectangles. I was looking at this map with red rectangles and orange rectangles and I thought "I'm gonna die because I can't tell which rectangle I'm in."  :clueless:

I was in Alabama and just missed one. Rain drops about 2-3 inches on the windshield, sky was green and windy. We were at some convenience store looking at a buy and sell ( I was hunting cars! :) )  When my Dad said  uh its time to get the f..k out of here. We drove down the road some and tons of emergency vehicles, military etc went screaming by. We noticed a semi truck and trailer laying on its side about 100 yards in a field with no tires marks? We couldn't figure out how the heck that happened? ( Stupid northerners! LOL) We got to a hotel room later that night and turned on the TV and discovered the same convenience store/ gas station we were at was leveled . Lots of destruction all around that area too. It was not far from Cullman ( Hey I wonder how Moaral is doing?)  Next day we drove to Georgia " hunting" . We ended up going back to Cullman and I bought a 55 Chevy Belair shell and towed it home.
Had a local tornado here in Barrie in 1985 , lots of damage . A guy I know who crewed on a local circle track car lost his son in that one. Found him impaled to a tree. He was never the same... :('
I REALLY don't like tornadoes! I'll take the snow any day!

Round one of the day just blew through here. It was dark as night outside for about an hour with heavy rain and lots of lightning. Just plain old rain now, but they are saying that a couple more rounds to go before we are done. They say each round will be worse than the one before it because of the additional heat in the atmosphere. Lucky me.....

My buddies business in fountain had 7 bobcat's destroyed.  Every plastic part has holes in it.  roof is full plastic. Busted out windows.
13 work trucks busted windshields and side windows.  Massive body damage.
All their spreaders and lawn mowers were destroyed.  Literally anything plastic or upholstery has holes in it.

The fountain police department had all their windows in their patrol cars busted out and lights all busted up.  County sheriff's patrol cars were hit the same.

My brother in law had his windshields shattered as well as the main window in his home.

I had some fence post holes dug at my fathers house and they filled up 30" with hail.

Mulitple friends that I have in widefield, security and fountain have had damage to their cars and most were totaled.
  Lots of damage down there!

So my towns internet has been off for 4 days.   There is a fire in La Veta, about 100 miles from my town that has a large forest fire burning.  It knocked out 90% of the internet carriers and all cell phones except AT&T.  some land lines were down also.
We now have internet again but it's very slow.

It was a pleasure to not have internet for a little while.  Brings back fond memories.

Extreme weather.

We have 9 fires in the state.

Not surprising due to the dry climate and the fact that we don't let natural fires burn themselves out.  We stop every fire that burns.  Then of course we have a ton of beetle kill trees all over the state.  These things combined will cause this burn all year until the snows come again.

Not that big a deal really.  unless it's my house that's burning of course.  I build homes right smack dab in the middle of giant forests that all need burned.  I've made a ton of money over time doing fire mitigation for my clients.

Just as I was about home from work yesterday, the tornado alert came on the radio.  It was for a storm that was about 1 1/2 hours away from me.  The alert was more ominous then I've ever heard before.  Apparently it was a "Tornado Emergency" alert instead of the normal "Tornado Warning" that usually plays.  An "Emergency" is issued when a tornado is headed for a heavily populated area.  It certainly got my attention.   So far it doesn't look like there were any fatalities.  They are still searching homes.  Last I heard was 17 injured.

Tornado's are so scary,  Living in Alabama I do have a shelter. Built it myself. 12" thick concrete walls with r-bar, will hold up to 15 people.

Does anyone disagree our weather patterns are getting more severe?

Hurricanes, tornadoes, breaking heat records?

I'm glad this year was somewhat mild for Norcal but I think the next seven years are going to be hot and very dry.

Holy moley 4" of rain for the year? I saw that a couple of times in the 20's - thats nuts.

How about 1983 when it dumped 23" of rain - seem to remember that.

We have a bunch of forest fires going again. Pretty much normal for the season. It seems like they are more severe however I believe it is only because they don't respond to them as well as they used to. More university guys having meetings and less water bombers in the air.

Yup... Sitting at a round table discussing "Maybe it should be left to burn?      Fire fighting is dangerous, have they got an app for that?"  Lets just put the damn fire out already.....

Then we have lots of bare ground & the rain comes along & we get landslides....   Imagine that...

We are at the end of an ice age.  It's probably only going to get hotter over the next several thousand years.
After some ten's of thousands of years we will cool off again.

Where I live would have been under Glaciers 17000 years ago. Somewhere between there and 15000 years the glaciers broke way and humans first came wandering into this area.  We have lots of documented archeological sites in the 12000 year range in our area.  There are much fewer at 15000 years ago here.  However there are many 15000 year sites just over our mountains.  It took a couple thousand years before this area was opened for hunting.
These people would have dealt with packs of horse size Dire wolves and saber toothed tigers.  Mammoths can be found in our area as they were here as well.  15000 years is a pretty short amount of time to loose most of the big mammals on the planet.  The warming trend has killed lots of things.
Global warming is a sham.  Water pollution is not.

The wife and I spent the weekend cleaning and reorganizing a storage room we have off the kitchen. One of our neighbors had a Chinese restaurant that he closed down and we bought a heavy duty rack for 100 bucks and 2 medium duty ones with wheels for 50 bucks each. We're using one of the medium duty ones for water and the other for food and food prep stuff. The big rack is for the real survival stuff like a 71 Cuda grille, shaker bits, dash pad and my 15x7 Rallye wheels. We pick up a new case of water everytime we hit Sams or Costco and new cases of food when we see something different or on sale. We also added 6 more solar panels and another 1040 amp hours to our solar setup

Highest gas

A few more fires, a few Earthquakes, and add in a downward economy, and then maybe we can get rid of some of this excess population.

In Kalifornia there are also mud slides and flooding...especially if the levy fails on the Sacramento river.

I live 1/3 mile from the gateway to the Delta. The Paradise wild fire is 130 miles north of my house. The smoke from the Paradise wild fire woke me up at 6 am. At 7am took the dog for a walk. What I thought was a tomato red moon was the sun. Decided to go to Goodguys car show 45 miles south in Pleasanton, thinkin I'd be far from the hazy polluted sky. Same stinky smokey sky at Goodguys. My eyes were watering, my head felt like it was going to explode. Some spectators and participants were wearing masks. By the time I got home I was wheezing too. Radio warnings to stay indoors. On a happy note enjoyed Goodguys,  ran into some friends, and got some rare parts in the swap meet area for the 68 AMX.

We got a heavy wet snow here shortly after Thanksgiving, and I was afraid that was a precursor to a bad winter.  But then the whole month of December into January we only had a few dustings and mostly mild weather until yesterday.  Yesterday we got a couple inches by me, but I shouldn't complain. Central IL and especially down by St Louis got hammered!
Next weekend it's supposed to get very cold, maybe winter came late and the next couple months will be bad.
I hope not, I'm scheduled to get a hernia surgery mid February and won't be able to lift much for the next month afterwards.  No shoveling for me then, if we get snow during that period I'm in trouble!

For the past five days, 120 miles east of the SF Bay Delta, got four to six feet of snow depending on the elevation. Some places have ten foot snow drifts. But down here the past five days, it rained pitch forks. Yesterday and today, was/is an exception here. Sunny and 63 degree highs. Talk about extremes. You have a choice of water skiing or snow boarding.

Don't laugh. They panic here when it rains! Being from NY when I moved here twenty years ago I laughed too. Now I'm used to the incompetence. :Thud:

There's part of me that cringes at adding to Buffalo's reputation for rough winters, but the next couple of days look to be extreme even for here.   High of 0 F, windchills in the -15 to -20 F range.  It's a good reminder about why we cherish the beautiful summers here.

The nanny state has arrived here in New York state!!! Weekend before last we got a foot of snow, every thing closed and Governor Cumo was telling everyone to stay off the road. my liberal niece and nephew were crying about my being out driving in it. I have driven a tow truck for 35 years and I am the guy people call when they can't make it home!   :haha:

Well the big winter storm was a no show. Rain in the morning and the sun came out this afternoon. Made it to 37F. Tonight low 18F.

Last year we got hit with 10 inches of heavy wet snow. I had no electricity for 3 days. Luckily I have a generator and other emergency gear.

I don't know how you guys up north deal with that extreme cold. When I was younger the cold didn't bother me to much but now no way.

Stay warm my friends!

When you grow up with it it's no big deal. You just roll with it. Last week my daughter as winter camping in Quebec. She was really looking forward to sleeping outside. It's all about being prepared for the conditions and acting accordingly.

Well for once they were right. A foot of snow, 80 mph winds, 0 visibility, loss power off and on all day, airport closed, highways closed, basically a mess. Blizzard, bomb cyclone, snowpocalyose, whatever you want to call it everything is shut down. Most things are still closed this morning, including schools and major highways. Today is dig out day.

Clear skies here in Salida.  Beautiful as usual.  Thank goodness I don't have to dig snow out of my already dug house hole.

I have to go down to Colorado Springs and replace my mom and dads shingles on part of their roof.  It blew right off last night.  New roofing as well.   They just had it replaced due to a hail storm last summer down there.

The front range SUCKS !!

I live in Castle Rock, just south of Denver.  I-25 is still closed to the south of us, all the way to Colorado Springs, so I have the day off again. They were still pulling people out of their stranded vehicles till 1 or 2 in the morning and bringing them to the Douglas County Fairgrounds about a mile from my house.  We drove around a bit this morning and saw dozens and dozens of semi's parked around town and around the local exits just waiting. Lots of vehicles and semi's at the fairgrounds.  We watched as a bus or two at a time started bringing people onto and down the closed interstate back to their vehicles.  Must be quite a process to get the vehicles cleared out of the way, get the drivers back to their cars so they can move them, then the plows clear some more highway, then bring more drivers to move the cars, then more plowing, all of this for 20 miles or more.

Hats off to all the Police, Fireman, CDOT and County personnel and the local churches who stepped up last night and today to help these people.

Looks like a good dump of snow. Nice to see others helping each other. Here we had a couple of feet of snow on the ground and it got pretty warm everything was icy fun to walk.  Then we got high winds and lots of hard rain. Now there is lots of water around as the ground is still frozen but it sure beat the snow down over the last 24 hours. The lawn is starting to appear in spots. Wont be long now till its gone...

I was in Albertsville Al. this week and they had a F1 this past Monday. I have seen damage before on TV, but my first time to see it in person. That freaked me out, trees snapped like toothpicks, and the path off the Tornado just cleaned everything almost to the ground.

Took a mini vacation last week.  Started out on Wednesday in heavy rain.  Once I got into Minnesota, I watched as the temps started dropping.  Soon I was driving through freezing rain, then sleet and then snow.  After 2.5 hours of driving 35 mph, I drove out of it and got to the hotel.  Luckily the Minnesota DOT did a great job of cleaning it all up and my drive back on Friday was normal.

Winter Storm Warning here today.... starting at 10 AM.....  :verymad:
Same here south of you in the flatlands.  The WPC club has a show near me usually the 3rd Sunday in April, but this year due to Easter they scheduled it tomorrow.  Last weekend the weather was perfect.  I got my convertible out of hibernation so I could attend.  Well now it's supposed to snow 4-8" freaking inches so it undoubtedly won't happen.  Dammit dammit dammit!!!  :steamingmad:
I cut the grass this morning early before it started to sprinkle.  First time of the year, the grass was getting high and thick so it desperately needed it and with the weather forecast, it was sort of now or never.  Later today I'll be shoveling snow.  How many people can say they cut their grass and shoveled snow off their driveway the same day?
On the other hand, how many people would want to have that distinction?  :haha:

I have been in both. Shear randomness of tornadoes is unnerving. House I was in lost lawn furniture. Nextdoor trees were gone and windows blown out. 3rd out was about the same. 4th house was gone entirely.

In ca for many years and yes many major quakes.

Given choice. Earthquakes any day of week over tornado.
Oh yea... there was a flying and screaming cow to hear. Something to never forget.

I see your point, 100%.

Oklahoma was having some earthquakes there for a while. Nothing really bad though. Just some vibration.Did some damage down by Oklahoma City area about a year or two ago. They suddenly stopped. It's heart-stopping watching the Weather Radar and that massive red area goes over your town and you hope that hook doesn't develop. We live on pins and needles every Spring.

Dealing with the nasty Skiatook flood right now. Worse in decades.

Ok, last time I took the time to do this was the week I got banned from Moparts... Lets see if I can avoid that fate this time..

Total deaths in the USA from 1960 to Dec 31 2018 due to Tornadoes... 5172

Total deaths in the USA from 1960 to Dec 31 2018 due to Earthquakes... 360

I think it's safe to say I'd rather be in an Earthquake... Though I'd rather not be in another as large as I was in back in 64....

Cool stats.
My family moved to Ca from Wi just in time for the 70 quake. Still remember my father (Wi native) running around house like a chicken with head cut off.
I was driving near the 87 Whittier Narrows quake. My first thought was that I had a flat tire. Then I see everyone else pulling over to check their cars out also. Kind of humorous to watch.

I was in Houston the first week of may. Up in Ontario we often complain about the cold. Certainly wasn't cold in Houston, but while there there was hail, loads of rain, lightning, three tornadoes and the some of the highways were flooded. Traffic stopped completely on the Katy fwy.
Seems no mater where you are they have some kind of screwy weather to deal with.

There are numerous major fires and more on the way due to high winds and drugged out people the gov caters to...
Multiple millions now without power.

Just another day in Ca. where the choice to spend 10x more on post issue strikes over preemptive strikes.

And our govenor just confirmed that they cannot confirm the fire was started by "unhoused Angelinos"

we got 18" this morning in about 3 hours in Salida.  It compressed to half that depth in a few hours.  Roads are really slick.  I saw one car had went over a 90' cliff and into the Arkansas river.  Typical days drive.
one hour southwest we only got about 4" in Westcliffe/Silvercliffe. Picture is of the Sangre De Cristo's on the way home from work.

Very bad storm this afternoon. I was at work when it hit. 100mph winds for at least a half hour. 95% of the trees in the town where I work are topped or have fallen. Looks like a war zone. Took a long time to find my way out of town. Everywhere I turned the road was blocked. Lots of big trees on houses. Work has significant damage. Roofs partially blown off buildings, overhead doors blown off. A block wall was pushed in 6 inches. A 2x12 piece of lumber was blown through a building. Luckily no damage at home. Still no power right now. My daily driver somehow escaped without a scratch. Other coworkers vehicles didn't fair as well. I counted 8 semis flipped on the way home.

Power came back on at my house yesterday morning at around 9.  Still no power in Marion where I work.  All the surrounding small towns had huge lines for gas.  Everyone from the hard hit areas had to drive there to fill up.

They are calling this a "derecho".  I had never heard the term before.  Basically it's an inland hurricane.

My day yesterday - Power out early this morning from rain and 60+mph winds, go to plug in the generator and find out the plug I have doesn`t fit, can`t find anyone with the correct cord in stock, slip on ice and fall getting an extension cord from the decorations out in front of the house, wife walks in the door around 1pm - power comes on 5 minutes later, go to get her Jeep inspected and the shop screwed up my appointment and had to re-schedule, wife leaves to pick up pizza around 5pm and not 2 minutes after she left power go outs again.   :pullinghair:   It went from 50 degrees yesterday to single digits last night but power is still on this morning. The media makes a huge deal over "extreme weather" and "climate change" but science needs accurate data and how much do we really have, maybe 100 years on a planet 4.5 billion years old?

"At first glance, there appears to have been an increase in tornadoes since these records began, but that is not the full story. It was not until the early to mid-1990s that an extensive Doppler radar network was established in the United States for the detection of tornadoes. Until then, records relied on eyewitnesses to report tornado sightings, which means that if no one saw a tornado, it would not appear on weather records. This makes it hard for researchers to spot any long-term trends because the data is skewed by an increased detection of small tornadoes and tornadoes in sparsely populated areas after Doppler radar networks were introduced."

You're not alone.  This morning my daughter says some liquid is coming out of the wall switch.  WTF?!?!  The short story, I think the hot water heater vent pipe in the attic either had condensation that dripped off into the wall or the high winds back drafted the vent pipe with the same effect.  I've lived in this house 15 years and never had such an issue.  The cold temperatures and high winds have been relentless.

For the engineers out there.  You can see how large the base of the flag pole is.  From the dealership website, "This flag measures 50 feet by 80 feet. The flagpole is 43 inches in diameter. The pole weighs 35,600 pounds! The base contains 400,000 lbs of concrete. The flag is made of nylon and weighs 80 pounds. The flag can last anywhere from 2 days to 2 months before it has to be changed. We believe this to be one of the largest continuously flying flags in the United States. It was erected in 2001."  Luckily no one was hurt / killed.

As a followup to the Dodge flag pole breaking, this link is a video of the deflection prior to breaking.  You can hear the metal stressing.  (Harry Baals is a former mayor.  Yes, really.)

A week after the blizzard, it's 50 degrees outside and the snow is disappearing.

Very interesting article. I do wonder what the parents were thinking when they named their child Harry Baals. Reminds me of the song a Boy named Sue, LOL.

Some crazy drifting down near Chatham, ON.  You can barely see the cars on the road.
This helps me understand why you canadians tuck your cars away for winter.

I mean, we get cold and snow here in New Jersey but.... omg!

I can occasionally take my car out in the winter but only when theres no salt left on the roads.

We got 22" of snow here in Minnesota within 32 hours.
This is a 22" Weber grill..     The grill is 39.5"(100.33cm) tall at the lids handle...

So far other than a severe wind/rain storm it has been an extremely mild winter so far, temperatures in the 30's, 40's and above 50 a couple times. That has now changed - 10-12" and still snowing. Not that severe but my back is not feeling so good as it's heavy, wet stuff. How many days till spring?

Trees and power lines down everywhere. Lost power Monday around 4:30pm and estimate for restoring it is today (Wednesday) around 10pm. Thankfully we have a generator so at least heat, well pump and some lights are working.

The Challenger dodged a bullet on the 31st.  Tornados blew threw the area.  This one was just south of my town.  No damage here.  The same system damaged my aunts shop where the Challenger was being stored.  The metal ceiling stayed intact even after the entire south side of the roof was blown off and both overhead doors blew in.  The car is dirty but there is no damage that I can see.

Wow. Close call!
Wendy and I just drove back from the Phoenix area with the 5th wheel. A few days before we left, on the news, we were seeing tornado reports, high winds etc. We waited for two calm days to tool across Oklahoma and Kansas. From the perspective of a Northern Ontario Canadian, it's strange having to watch the wind before you drive. I thought once we were south of the snow there would be nothing to worry about....wrong....I'd rather deal with snow than wind. Maybe it's what you get used to?

Glad Your car made out ok. Hopefully none hurt in the area?
