Pandemic Panic. Is Everyone’s State Freaking Out?

As a power grid technician (aka Substation Relay Technician), I can tell you that I see no reason to fear this. Prepare? Yes. Always. But this grid, both transmission and distribution, are more modern and protected than I'd ever thought I'd see in my entire career.

@cuda hunter I can only speak for my own territory, but I can say there is so much protection and redundancy built into the power grid, that it's mind blowing. Sitting in a substation prior to beginning work testing this protection as we speak. I'm always up for questions if you wish.

My state finally went down. We were the last ones standing (West Virginia) unfortunately though since a case was reported yesterday the governor took the step of shutting everything down. I'm not too worried myself with it all since I work in a Federal Prison and we try to keep it a controlled environment as it is as far as people bringing in possible health related problems. Just kind of sucks as far as entertainment is concerned since the weather hasn't fully broke yet to be able to enjoy the outdoors.

Up here 'in the trade' we would call you a VAR-head. I'm more into PLC's so I'm a milliwatt.

I've done my share of power distribution though...gave it up...wires are too big.

@dodj so instead of VAR being volt amp reactance, perhaps now it could relate to media hype as VAR: Virus Asinine Response.  Man, even my company is going overboard. Three guys just got forced to go home 14 days for quarantine because they admitted to having had family visitors from hot zones.

As a one time microbiology student in college, I found this clip very feasible. Nothing scary, just the opposite. I'm no doctor, don't even play one on tv, but I've watched this repeatedly and can't find disagreement with it.

Thinking ahead here..... I figure it will be August before things are back to " normal" so I went out and stocked up at the steel supply store. Bought a bunch of round tubing, square tubing and some angle  so I can work on the Javelin if I'm forced to stay home for that long. That and thinking , just in case the steel store is forced to close.  Funny when I was there I met a few circle track guys in doing the same thing!  HAHA gotta have priorities don't ya know!
My one son is playing with a Honda fart can car , and he is doing the same getting parts/gaskets etc to swap out some parts he has been gathering all winter for his " build" Hey at least it's not video games I guess?

I just can't sit around and watch TV if the "worst " happens.



I have filled up the freezer  and some dry goods and bought a few extra "security supplies" just in case it really hits the fan.

Illinois government just issued orders that all restaurants and bars shut down through the remainder of March (at least). Our Kroger grocery store is swamped. All Churches of all denominations ordered closed. There's a hint of a major panic in the air. Just wondering how it is in other members states. The virus? Not that scary. The public reaction? Eerie. The stock market? Horrifying. I've worked and saved my butt off all my working life and am 24 working days from retirement. This just freakin figures.

Somebody disagreed with it because it's been removed!
Our 2000# governor just announced he is ordering the state to lock down starting 5:00 Saturday.  No non essential travel.  Grocery store, pharmacies, gas stations and a limited amount of other businesses will be allowed to travel to but that's about it.
I rushed over to the liquor store and stocked up on beer and a bottle of bourbon as soon as I heard, and beat the rush! 
Thankfully I got set up with a laptop at work this week, brought it and some accessories home yesterday, and am up and running working from home now. 
It's a little tight compared to my cubical but it will work out.  Hopefully my job doesn't go away in the economic collapse!
