A while ago on cc.c some members offered parts, others offered labour, some offered both in order to help get Andy's cuda done.
Cancer took Andy before it was completed. Anybody know what happened to Andy's 'cuda? Just wondering if it stayed in the family and if it got finished.

The family got the car to Carlisle the year Andy passed , a lot of us signed the car for her .
She always seems to make it to Carlisle , & still has the car , Like Heathers Duster this is one car we need to get finished up for Kathy & Andy !!
As far as I know, his Plumb-crazy Cuda is in storage. His son wants to make it run, but he isn't a mechanic.

Seems to me that that we can either just let it sit there or do something about it.

Ann Arbour was where Andy and Kathy lived and where we worked on it the weekend Andy died. I, also think about him from time to time and even though I didn't get to spend much time with him, he was a gentleman and a giver. :andyangel:

:iagree: This is the perfect story, and while they do not to OE restorations, they finish cars and get them running just like Andy's. We should get permission/agreement from the family and decide who has the most background knowledge, information and pics that is willing to submit a form.

I ran into Cathy at Autorama, she came over to say hi. She's working her tail off, and doesn't have much time for the car. Darrin has been coming over now and again to help out. The kids have their own lives, and haven't been able to do too much since we last saw it.
There is still a SLEW of work to do, and some of it costly.
The car is not yet running primarily because of the serpentine belt system Andy wanted to use.
It involves picking up a few random pulleys from a junkyard - but you have to know what you are looking for.
There are part numbers that are very specific to the kit.
I think I have the numbers, so I'll look and see what info I have and translate them here.
There's also some wiring and testing that needs to be done. I'm not sure if they have purchased a battery. I don't think that there's any carb linkages either.
If we want to do a go fund me, that's cool.
We can do that.
Dave, maybe you and I need to scoot out there for a visit and catalogue where the car is at.
As far as garage squad goes, I wouldn't mind filling it out, but I think we need Cathy's permission.

Important point IMHO: I think it would mean more to Kathy to have it finished personally by friends of her and Andy. I know we mean a lot to her. When I saw her last year at Carlisle, I hadn't seen her in two or three years, she hugged me and I didn't think she was going to let go. I think we should do this ourselves if possible. :alan2cents:
Seriously I am willing to do this , many people know my reputation on this site if Kathy wants to do this , the need is cash , I still have bills to pay here & need a flight but I am not looking to be paid above that ....
How about we look at a calendar and pick a day/weekend to work on it?

As a member of the original thrash crowd, I like Dan's idea of he and Dave sussing out what the car needs so that we can apply work/knowledge/money towards getting it up and running. Would a go-fund-me deal generate enough dough to get Neil up as well? I've also got some sources for parts and Chris was in on the original build and has his own wrecking yard, so I've got to think the parts can be chased down. Subject to scheduling, I'll re-attend, just let's get our ducks lined up in a row first, eh? :yes:

Cuda and adding some personal touches. His wife Cathy was very involved in the restoration. They were good friends with some members here, most noteabley Viperman and Ashley, Spikedog and DZM73. Part way through the restoration Andy got cancer and as his health failed he was unable to continue with the restoration. An initiative was started to get his car done. Members donated parts and money and on a weekend in June/14 there was a build party at his house in Ann Arbour, Michigan. The build team included Viperman from Pennsyvania, Spikedog and DMZ73 from Michigan, Bigschlunk from Wisconsin and Brads70, Jimynick and myself from Ontario. Seems to me I'm missing somebody. Sadly, Andy passed away on the Friday night that we were there but we went ahead anyways with Cathy's blessing. We made good progress by getting the drive train installed and a lot of other interior and mechanical components but we did not get the car running or nearly finished. Sometime during that weekend the car got named The Last Wish Cuda. It was taken to Carlisle that year and sat proudly by the C-C.com tent as a tribute to a great friend and member of the site. Since then car has been in limbo. Cathy has moved but still has the car with the hopes of finishing it someday.
During the flurry of emails on finishing Andy's Cuda a couple of years ago, I put my hand up to buy a water pump that was needed at the time. Andy passed before the purchase was made.
I never met Andy. When I joined c-c.com (late 2012?), he seemed to be one of the early responders to just about any question asked on the forum, tossing in a joke or two for good measure. The news came out about his illness about the same time I had completed recovery from a successful tumor removal operation, so his tragic passing was a bit of a "there, but for the Grace of God, go I" situation for me. Reading about how others on this forum that knew Andy well felt about him, I think it's only fitting that this community figure out how to get his car done. I'm happy to kick the money for the pump towards a plane ticket for CP if that's the best way to help.
DMZ73 aka Dan put this together for the 2015 calendar. A lot of us have our stories about what an upstanding person Andy was.
We are the keepers of the memories to share.

Andy was quite a guy. Carlisle 2013 we had that Friday night in Viperman land that will be one of my most memorable ever. I never laughed so hard. There was just a few of us, but we are bonded together for life now. :yes:

As for the PS pump the item listed appears to be for a pump only.. Will they not need a reservoir as well as a high pressure line? Thinking someone might have a derelict sitting around they might pull all this from which would include a pulley.

The used pump I see appears to be out of a newer unit, or perhaps a Jeep based on what

Itf so It will have a 6-rib pulley vs the 7-rib the Magnums use unless we can find a deal on some 6-rib magnum pulley's ....... :idea:
The unit in the box below p/n 20-6159 which is for pre-75 chrysler products would have a 5/8" bore Keyway held with a nut. No not anymore... were pretty much late model only. Average age in the yard right now is 2012/2013
Mostly insurance wrecks. Add to that the fact that this month was highest scrap price in awhile. Most guys cleaned house.

We have collectively decided to forgo the Serpentine belt system in favor of a traditional belt and bracket system.
We had a mix of 6 groove and 7 groove and can't seem to locate the Serpentine belt kit setup either.

Not only is the 440 air gap IM too tall, but It looks like there is a crack in the IM where this vacuum nipple is supposed to go. Pls advise.
I sincerely doubt we would be able to close the hood once the air cleaner assy is on!

Usually you will need to clearance the choke well for the secondary linkage a little which I recommend over using the spacer

It took me a bit to digest all this!
For the brake lines:
I can't remember if we have pre-bent SS fuel lines or not.
I would say we go with the standard lines, unless anyone has any objections.
For the flexible front and rear hoses, I run the standard hoses- his car is a B.B. 440 that is pretty well built, so I'd go with the groups recommendation.
Let's get the clips, but I'm pretty sure he's got a set of clips hanging around.
The radiator hoses:
I'd use the stock pre-formed rubber hoses.
The pre-formed brake booster to manifold hose should be a standard item.
The power booster is a standard (banded) Midland unit common from 72-74.
The brake kit- we only need the rear.
Let's get the pads too.
The front, the only thing we need are the hoses and the pads, but Cathy is going to get the pads.
We also need an emergency brake cable kit.

They don't list a booster to manifold hose ... on my small block there's nothing preformed about it, just a length of hose.

I did work on it a while and yes the shoes were wrong although the box label was right. That's why it took so long to figure out why things weren't going together right.

All front of engine accessory drive brackets, bolts and pulleys have now been purchased, including PS pump bracket and alt bracket.
An alternate Alternator may need to be purchased, as there is a new one, with a Serpentine belt pulley already in their possession.
Engine harness/forward harness is new.
Throttle kick down cable is a new Lokar kit.
Fuel lines from tank to engine might already be in. I'll need to double check once more. Pretty sure they were installed.
Need:
Solid Brake lines are not yet purchased for the car. Car is a 72. Disc front brakes. Still need soft front brake lines from solid line to caliper
Need:
Solid fuel line from fuel pump to carb.

Technically he's got a 6 Pack style air cleaner but the carb sits too high to install the air cleaner and still shut the hood.
We'll need to switch intake and pull the carb spacer in order to fit the air cleaner he has.

just pulling the spacer could be enough it is not needed in there , I just have to notch the choke well to clear the secondary linkage without the spacer . There is no need to change intake , he has one of the lowest available now .
Discussions between Dan, Neil, Ian and myself have brought this project closer to reality. The parts list is near completion and the build dates are July 4-6. This is a Wed, Thurs, Fri. That may seem strange but there was no weekend that worked for everyone. Dan is the most familiar with the situation so that needed to be taken into consideration.
Dan has mentioned it already but I'll mention it again, Dave at Roseville Moparts has stepped up in a huge way on this and we certainly appreciate it. Be sure to support him with your future parts purchases.

Things like the proper proportioning valve, trans kick down bracket, throttle return spring and brkt, proper sized rear brake shoes and hrdwre, trans cooler and plumbing as it has an aftermarket alum rad, shroud, fluids, voltage reg, interior pieces to finish, t/lamp wiring, battery/hld dwn and brkts, cables, etc, etc. Then there's the question of funds, is there any interest in members being able or willing to contribute via an agreed method to Kathy to help cover incurred costs? Are there any other members who'd be interested in attending/working on the car? Just some thoughts that I wanted to throw out to the members of the forum for discussion. It sounds like Neil and the Canadian contingent would be going the morning of July 4th and Dan has to bail by July 6th I think it was. :thinking:

Further to Neil and I talking the other night, I thought I'd bring my Rigid tube bender, a steel line flare kit and a multi-meter. We were under the impression that either Dan or Cathy had sufficient hand tools there; no? Anything else anyone can think we should bring? Besides a bottle opener, of course! This car fought us kicking and screaming every step of the way!
I'm proud and happy to say, we flipped the key around 11:00pm last night and it ROARED to life!
It sounded angry, and sprung a few leaks.
The guys will trouble shoot today and get it worked out a little cleaner.
I'll figure out how to post the video.

Ian and I are back home. Neil stayed for another day or two to tidy up a few details on the car. As Dan said, a big thank you to Dave at Roseville Moparts. I must also put in a big word of thanks to Parts Peddler in Chelsea, MI. Not only did they have a lot of stuff we needed and thought would be hard to get but the guy we dealt with knew what we were talking about. That can be a rare find these days. If you are ever in that area and need something, go there.
I also want to make mention of Darren, a friend of theirs, that worked with us on Wednesday and chipped in some used parts to help with the project.
As has been said, the car fought us every step of the way. To hear it run for 20 minutes this morning was not only deffening but very rewarding. I only wish Cathy could have been there for that. Unfortunately she had to work today but the excitement she had last night in the couple minutes that it ran made the battle worth winning. I can't say that it's a perfectly restored car but it's a car that carries a story that will be tough to rival. It brought forth the good in a lot of people, not just those that worked on it but also those that worked to get us the parts we needed, donated parts, sent money and offered support in any other way.
And yes, the car is registered for Carlisle this year.
Well, Murray and I got home about 7pm today after the damndest 3 day flog I think I've ever been on. This car gave us a serious lesson in the "School of hard Knox" if you get my drift! Everything and I mean everything broke, was the wrong part, didn't exist, leaked, needed modification in a slog that took on biblical proportions, or at least it seemed that way when the standard call or reaction was "Jesus Christ, don't tell me THAT broke/was the wrong size/length/hadn't been bought, etc. etc."LOL I made a non-exaggerated 11 or 12 trips to Parts Peddlers in good old Chelsea for parts on Thursday alone and several more to Carquest/Auto Zone. The new water pump piddled, the new master cylinder was seized, the fan was 3/16th" from the now changed upper rad hose on the now changed thermostat housing on the new me-made gasket... and so on. Lucky for us, we had Neil there to be the impresario and we were fairly well able to follow his lead! As noted, the peak was when, at 11pm, we lit the recalcitrant old bitch and she sprang to life with a bellow that would've warmed your hearts. Imagine our chagrin, when 5 minutes into it, the carb and fuel line were pissing fuel onto the manifold right beside the ignition coil while the aforementioned water pump peed onto the floor?! Back in the morning and back to Parts Peddlers for the overnighted master only to be told it was back ordered and, after the Lord's name had been mentioned, we were reprieved to find another supplier had sent theirs, but sadly, the water pump was truly not coming and the lug nuts were neither, so off to my pals at Carquest and thank God, they actually had a new WP AND lug nuts in stock? Hallelujah! I can't believe none of the brake lines I made and fitted didn't leak and after tightening up the front brake flex line connection, we were actually able to bleed the brakes. Dan Z did a hell of a job finalizing the emergency brakes after I gave up in disgust and they actually function now! Neil now fully fueled with root beer (we stuck to the real stuff) got the old girl, kicking and screaming, to fire again and we ran her for the 20 minutes while watching her generate enough heat to melt Dan's cute funnel with the pink hose as well as 2 or 3 plug wires and #7 header pipe was a lovely shade of pink/red. We had to put the hose in on the rad and were rewarded with a lovely mist bath for 20 minutes as we watched the slow fuel leaks seemingly stop- thank Christ! Neil was persuaded to stay by Doug and that was a very smart move on Doogie's part, as Neil'll have most of the remaining woes fixed before he's done. A shout out to my fellows-in-thrashing and my brothers-in-bashing the devils, out of what appears to be a really nice- and so far really loud, Cuda, for Cathy and family and finally, for Andy. Sorry we waked you Thursday night Andy, but I think you got a kick out of seeing it finally come to life, mate. :drinkingbud:

There were more people behind the scenes making this possible. I thank my lucky stars that I know so many fantastic people in the hobby.
I'm not much of a mechanical guy, but I can figure enough out on my own given the time and wherewithal.
I'm more of a put it together guy- I took the stance of- "every part needs to get from that table, on to that car"... while I couldn't do what Murray, Ian and Neil did, I did what I knew how to do.
Each one of us knew what they were good at and just got on it.
It was a friendly loving slog that we just had to do.
Yeah, as Ian mentioned, He had some frustrations with the E brake, and I stepped in the save him from a few moments of cursing. I couldn't have done what he did to set the E brake up as quick as he did, but could pick up where he left off.
We each built off each other, and while we didn't have much time to chat, we enjoyed each other's company and brought a car, a dream, and a last wish to life.
Neil was awesome, and a godsend. He was teaching along the way. I learned a lot by watching. He just had an e body book of knowledge that you could tap on at the onset of a question. You couldn't pay to get this kind of instruction or mechanical assistance on a regular basis. Neil was key.
As Mentioned, Darren had spent a lot of time over those few years getting that engine together, and made sure it was right on the setup. I think that went pretty flawlessly. That guy was really amazing.
I did spend time engaging Doug, Megan, and Cathy, walking them through what needed to be done, and how to do it. Megan and Doug and I spent a lot of time wrenching together.
I believe they had fun, got dirty and sweaty, and felt important to the build, and learned a thing or two in the process.
Andy was my friend, and he was a damn good one. He was always there to help me when I needed someone.
I'm really glad to see that he was just as important to other people.
Thanks to our friends at E-Bodies.org, and Cuda-Challenger.com. To everyone who contributed- you continue to make this hobby awesome. There is good in this world.

Ok I finally got to a computer
Just got back today from Cathys
The car will be At Carlisle , I fixed everything I could , we need a few more parts but no more time to get them or install them , it does run & drive & for the most part is working great .
Thanks to everyone who contributed in any way , we accomplished a lot in the time we had & made huge strides in getting the Cuda Perfect

Firm Feel / Steer & gear steering box , brgs are shot probably 3-4 days away
turn signal switch , no brake lights
the car stops runs great & turns , I cobbled together a simpole exhaust for short term using Spikedogs mufflers

Amazing job guys, it sure brought a tear to my eye to hear that she fired up late at night and announced her presence! I'm sure Andy is tickled that his Cuda is not forgotten.

Also need the wiper motor drive link , the motor has the wider drive hub , of course the drive link we have is the small one

Considering that this car made us do everything 2-3x each, we made out ok.
I drove around for hours on Thursday trying to find the last few critical parts!!
@Chryco- killer work man. Glad to hear you stuck around to make it drivable..
did we end up using the new brake switch?
Did we try new bulbs in the tail lamps?
Any thoughts as to why the brake lights are not working?

I didn't check the bulbs , I traced power through the brake switch up the column but no power was coming back out of the turn signal switch
There was some discussion at the build if they were going to name the car. I'll through out the suggestion of calling it Kandy. K for Kathy and the rest is self-explanatory.

Great to see all the hard work come together to get it to Carlisle.
Let me tell you guys, Cathy was over the moon happy that this car is up and running for Carlisle. It sounds wicked, and can chirp the tires easily.

Wow, it really happened! I've got to tell you that there were times during that last 3 day thrash when I really wondered if the car would make it to Carlisle and much credit goes to Neil as he led us on relentlessly, to achieve this happy result. As mentioned, this car DID sound wicked and I think Andy's still got a smile on his face knowing that all his hard work blossomed into this purple rose as seen here. Sure wish I'd've been there to see it drive in! :cheers:

Don't think it won any awards . . I would of picked it for a celebrity choice but did that last year and it may have looked odd to do it two years in a row. I actually picked a new members car . . . funny he was parked right next to the tent on Friday . . . Saturday morning he came to me and said " I signed up for your club last night and wondered if I can join you under the tent today?" I have only 1 picture from Carlisle But my hard drive failed earlier this month , I am working on getting 6000+ picture back now .
This is my only picture of Andy's Cuda at Carlisle this year. Not great, but at least it's something. :-[
It had a sweet interior with purple inserts on the seats. A pistol grip shifter. And let me tell you, it had one heck of a really healthy sounding engine in it. :burnout:

Yep, it's been a bit.
I haven't had a chance to get back there to get my tools.yes, I had a REALLY bad bicycle accident two weeks after and ended up out of commission for a few months. By the time I was better, I couldn't get out there cuz I was so busy with work.
Long story short- I got lucky- AGAIN.
I'm currently trying to stay out of the hospital! :twothumbsup:
I will get out there this summer, and I will post the pics.
As of right now, I don't know what I did with that SD card.... :dunno:

Neil came by my place Sunday and said that the airline screwed him around regarding making his connecting flight and by the time he got to Michigan, it was 2am and he didn't think Kathy would likely be up or want to work on the car at that time of the night. He therefore came back to Canada and we've been keeping him busy with work and root beer ever since! :cheers:
Unfortunately true ,15 hr wait for the next flight wasted the whole day , Kathy had to work Fri so it was a missed opportunity :sorry:

Last year I flew to Toronto & 4 hrs later went to Detroit , I should have just gone to Detroit , this year was the opposite , I fly to Detroit miss the opportunity & end up in To 4 hrs later one of these trips I will get it right !!

I was wondering the same. When the family is ready, they will sale and use the money for more needed things.
I can't really speak for the family , as far as keeping the car & driving / maintaining it , but the car is virtually done , it was running & driving when I last left there , Kathy drove to an A&W cruise night & drove at Carlise in 18 .
There are a number of small trim things to finish up & they have parts for the wrong year etc .
Not much more $$ needs to be invested , just time with someone that knows what to do .
