Title: A.G.A.R. Not an E BODY
Post by: anlauto on July 01, 2021, 04:02:19 PM
Huge shout out and thank you goes out to member @Shoooter (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/shoooter_13)  :worship: :drinkingbud:
Back in March he had PM'd me about a 71 Barracuda convertible for sale in my area....not having two nickels to rub together I didn't give it much thought and gave the guys number to my customer who's looking for a Cuda hardtop...
Long story short....turns out the guy has two and was willing to sell one to restore the other...My customer put him in touch with me....
It took four months, but we wrangled out a deal.

"BUILD ONE....GET ONE FORE FREE"

Yup, you read that right, I'm trading all of my labour restoring his one car, for the other car, which I intend on building for myself. :) (I get the one on the trailer)

Alan, that great news! So now that you're a restomod expert what are your plans for your new cuda? Enquiring minds want to know.

@anlauto (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/anlauto_19)  Glad it worked out for you and the other guy!  Hopefully the customer car doesn't have too many "surprises"!!
Are there more parts that aren't shown that come with "your" car or is it "what you see is what you get"??
Enjoy!!

Before @cuda hunter (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/cuda-hunter_176) can ask....only one car has a fender tag...both are BH27G1B's....

Thanks for posting the tag!  That was going to be the first thing I asked.
Next question, are you keeping the one with the tag?
Or since your doing an SRT, keeping the one without the tag.
Then building the customers car with the tagged car?

Perhaps you will find a build sheet!

Sweet cars!!

The one with the tag is the customer's car and it's going back to FC7, however, white leather interior, white top and white billboards

All the channels are there and I don't want to piecemeal it out. It appears the lowest "WIW" consensus is $800.00USD. Of course I wouldn't expect that from you, if interested make me a fair offer.

These look like the plates that are missing on my frame, hopefully you have them.

Now when putting a Gen III 392 Hemi into a Cuda I could have simply bought hood emblems that said "hemicuda".....but thanks to an old thread on here, and a link posted by member @DrEamer (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/dreamer_11095) :worship: , I got the brilliant idea to have some custom emblems made for my car. :)

Getting together with Givan, we designed the first set of 'Cuda392 emblems to come off his C&C machine....

I absolutely love them, here's a picture next to an NOS 340 version.....I can't wait to get this on the hood....

They may be his first, but they won't be my last  :drooling:

I am seriously jealous over your new project!  I have been considering pulling the 440 out of the convertible and installing a newer motor and 5 or 6 speed and modernizing the car with better suspension and installing A/C.  Love to say I would know how to do all those things but . . . certainly would need a lot of help.

Definitely watching your progress!   :clapping:

Yea, I agree...More and MORE companies are bringing out products to make a Gen III practically a direct bolt in...You can even do it in your wife's two car garage with very little effort.

Holley's family of companies has in-tank fuel pumps for stock tanks, radiators made to fit an 392  E Body
TTI has headers
Silver Sport Transmissions has the new TKX 5 speed with bellhousings for the 392
Reily Motorsports has the front suspension kits for an E Body with a 392 if you want to go that far
Mopar makes the wire harness kit..
DIYHemi also has a plug and play wire harness..

I already have the upgraded suspension, Wilwood brakes  and the TKO-600, all done by Alan.  I'm giving the GenIII serious consideration. While I like the heart and soul of the vintage 383 in my car I don't like it's reliability and drivability, especially as I get older. Next year I want to do the Hot Rod Power Tour.

I can't speak for Nick, but when I said "keeper" to me that means I intend on insuring the car, license plates and drive it as much as the good Lord allows....
...but I'll be the first to admit, that gets pretty old, pretty quick for me.... I don't enjoy the financial end of it either...I will have to pay $120/month for storage year round, plus like another $100/month or so for insurance...AND don't forget we can only use them maybe six months of the year...NOT TO MENTION....it's hard to justify having a $50K toy when you're up to your balls in debt  :alan2cents:

So, if I'm driving along someday and a crackpot offers me $200K for it, I will probably sell it...I hope that day doesn't come very soon, because I know I'll never find another 71 convertible for the same deal...

I've sold some pretty cool cars in my lifetime, of course I wish I could have kept them all, I think I would prefer to have had a dozen cool cars in my lifetime, then one ol' gal that I just can't let go of  :dunno:

$120 a month for storage?!  Wow!!  I was paying $300 a month for a 10' x 20' while I was building my garage!!
But my insurance is only like $600 a year.
But I hear you.  Paying to store a car sucks no matter how much you're paying.

Must be a Canadian thing.... To me when I say "Keeper" it means I intend to keep the car...
To this Canadian, it means I'm keeping the car until I can't drive....or perhaps give it to a son or daughter..

Alan and Nick are aberrations........ ::)

Everything is for sale!   Mike Ross said he was never going to sell his 440 6-pack survivor cuda... until some dude in the middle east called him up and offered him a "stupid amount of money that I could not say no to"

True...but sometimes things come full circle.
Mikes Cuda is in a container coming back from the middle east, soon to dock, so he's getting his "keeper " back...at a deal he couldn't refuse.
Nicks "keeper" was just that but I suppose if I got offered close to $80 K for a hemi motor, 4spd trans and Dana, I might let that 'keeper' go as well.
Plus since the Hemi convertible that motor was out of has long been destroyed, it helped in that decision.

Does he still host get-togethers at his shop? I haven't been up there in probably 5 or 6 years, once I fell away from Moparts, I guess I lost track of whether he was still doing them occasionally

OH yes...I'm way past being tired of purple... :tired: :'(

FUNNY STORY: This guy, the car's owner, had his heart set on red with white interior etc....apparently his Dad had a red 71 Cuda back in the day yadda yadda yadda.....but this car is an original FC7 car (318 Barracuda) so he thought he was doing a "disservice" by painting it red.....I thought I had him all straightened out and settled on RED.....I even wrote it down in my notes during the initial meeting...then his wife came in.... said "NO" to red, and that it had to be purple....so from that moment on...FC7 is what SHE wants, so FC7 is what SHE gets... :crying:

RED is so much easier...and nicer in my opinion..

A buddy of mine hand built a custom Street Rod, it took him three years to complet, it was a work of art, he swore he'd never sell it even though people always asked him how much for that car. One faithful day in 1999 at the Good Guys show a gentleman asked him how much for the car and he tossed out an outrageous price of $100,000, about double what the car was "worth" at the time, the guy didn't blink, he just said I'll take it. He actually never regretted selling it, he built another one better than the first and had money to spare, he discovered that he enjoyed building them more than showing them.

I was thinking I'll make a plate under the pedals but on top of the carpet, out of aluminum , sort of a skid plate if you will with a foot rest built in. Make lots of holes and use my dimple dies to make it stronger and for looks.

Last time the black Challenger was an original AC car so the area of the driver's vent box would be was a great spot for the new fuse box.

This car however is a non-AC car so it had a large hole there for the vent box....I thought about welding it up, then I just came up with the genius idea of making a plate with some riv-nuts that can be mounted in place just like the vent box  :D

@anlauto (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/anlauto_19) . Alan, I have to ask this. How do you get all the blasting media out of the trunk extensions drop off pockets? I have found sockets, rags, wrenches, screwdrivers etc. in those areas and no telling what other people have found in their vehicles. Those are deep and the only access besides from the top is the drain plug hole at the bottom. Do you use a combination of blowing compressed air in there and using a vacuum cleaner. Just curious.

True enough. In one Challenger, it seems I found several 1/4" and several 3/8" drive sockets on both sides. They must have spilled a socket set and just let them roll around for awhile in the trunk.

Looking good Alan. Great job!!

Even though it was my idea, I can't take credit for the work the body shop is doing :worship: ...From what I understand the bottom side is finished and they've started on the body work now...I'm going there tomorrow to take them more parts...Hopefully they will finish this car up ahead of schedule and move on to the next one...or two.... :D I dropped the 70 Charger resto-mod off there a couple days ago..

As a contractor, you know where to get it done right. That takes knowledge and experience as well.

I suppose....I'm just glad that though the years of doing this I've worked with some great body shops that have turned cars out at a reasonable rate and I've never encountered the "body shop jail" horror stories I hear so many deal with... :fingerscrossed:

However I was told today they want a new door skin for the DS :pullinghair:

You're 100% correct....I asked them to make the letters the correct size, but I never thought of the spacing when I ordered them....You can buy them as individual letters and do your own lay-out, but being my first time I chose to have them do the lay-out with the radius figured out etc...I really didn't notice the spacing until you pointed it out  :worship: :drinkingbud:

...but at the end of the day....it's not like anybody is going to believe they are original 17" PolyGlas tires :haha: :haha:

Alan, I looked at the website but couldn't find the ones like yours. I would be interested in talking with someone there
about a stencil, IF they were interested in producing one with the (close to) correct (1970 style) letters and spacing.
Would you know who I should contact?

I just picked up the phone and called the number on their website, super friendly and helpful guy...The ones I used are NOT stencils but thin rubber letters you glue on ...watch the videos and you'll get the idea...

So....unlike the video above, the ones I bought were already on the clear transfer paper...but if they weren't, then one could easily adjust the spacing... :alan2cents:

I like having it all sealed up on the inside too...plus it helps keep the dust down while painting the exterior panels....I see a lot of people just leave the floor pans in primer, but if you ever get water trapped under the carpet, primer will rust pretty quick in my opinion...but I'm not a body man...

Well Alan, I've learned one thing from you for sure.  I was confused at first,  but now I know I can change the title of my thread during the thread!!
I'm lying,  bottoms up, and more.  Thought you had like 4 threads going.

I'm not "green" with envy, I know how much it will cost to finish putting this together.
I am curious "yellow" how you picked sassy grass over your previously stated favourite color.
Title: Re: A.G.A.R. Bottoms UP !
Post by: anlauto on April 14, 2022, 07:15:33 PM
Yes, in any of your own threads, you can go to the first post, click on "modify" and change anything you like including the title....nifty little trick, and it doesn't clog down the forum with multiply threads on the same topic...

A couple of factors in the FJ6  decision ....first, this car will represent a different direction in which my company is heading, this resto-mod thing is just a current fad, and I fully understand that, but as long as people want them, I would like to keep building them...
Most people know me for "The World Famous Barrelcuda", which was FJ6 and white, so this car is sort of a nod to that heyday...I plan on displaying this car as much as I can

...and second...when I was dating my wife 24 years ago, I picked her up in a 71 340 Duster painted GY3 Curious Yellow....she hated the colour...I remember her inviting he parents outside to see this classic car...and her Mom said, and I quote " that's a shitty colour"  :))

So when discussing this car....I mentioned GY3 and it was shot down pretty quick..... :'( :crying: :crying:  happy wife, happy life... :dunno:

....and plus, I've already had a GY3 71 convertible

I WISH...that car was a 318 Barracuda, and back in the early 90's it was one of the first "clone" cars the get recognized in the magazines and being restored more accurately then some original cars....articles can be read here: http://www.alangallantautomotiverestoration.com/ALAN-IN-PRINT.html

I sold in it on Feb 10th 1995 for $25,000 to a guy in Eastern Canada, then a while later he sold it to a guy in Western Canada...last I heard, it was re-restored, painted a brownish colour and had a 426 Hemi put in it....I haven't heard anything else about it for 20 years or so :dunno:

I sold it to buy a Superbird :stayinlane:

I love Bahama yellow/ Butterscotch.

I was searching for an A body and almost bought a Butterscotch Dodge Demon. The Demon lacked the originality I was hoping for and I passed for my FC7 Duster.

Car looks great Alan. I like the whole restomod thing I think the industry is doing a lot better at making modern modifications look period correct. Resto-mods from the 90's were not my thing.

@anlauto (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/anlauto_19) I see the backs of your A Pillars are blacked out but not the front around the windshield?  I looked at the blackout engineering drawing from the Resources tab but had a hard time figuring out what was and was not blacked out around the windshield.  Do just the A Pillar backs only blackout apply to Challengers. too??
Yeah, my car's far from original, too!  Thanks.
Title: Re: A.G.A.R. Now the fun begins...
Post by: anlauto on April 28, 2022, 06:14:34 PM
I've only seen the A pillar black-out on convertibles....the front side does not matter because it's all covered. It's the small area between the wide A pillar stainless (found only on convertibles) and the side glass weather-strip channel that gets blacked-out....If it remained green in there, it stands out like a sore thumb.

The hardtops have dip rail moldings that almost hang over the weather-strip channel, so that area is not visible.

Wow...can't believe it's already been two weeks since getting the car back from the body shop....I guess time flies when you're having fun

Here's another Thursday night update....
Got the dash in and all the electrical finished, made all the AC hoses and completed that system, got the Nu-Relics power windows installed and almost got the top frame installed, but I was sent the wrong top cylinders, hopefully the correct ones will be here Monday...With the windows in, and the car sitting on it's wheels I can do the final adjustment to the doors and install the strikers etc...

Other then that, it's almost coming to a point where it will be "out of my hands" ...I'll need to send it out for the top to be installed and a custom fabricated exhaust to be made...

Not much to report, yesterday marked three weeks, the driveshaft arrived from SilverSport...super fast on that  :worship: got it installed, fluids topped up and the car is now at the upholstery shop getting the new top installed...

Here's some out in the sunshine for the first time pictures... 8)

Looks awesome !   you lost me on the 392 billboard however.  Maybe if they used a better font not so rounded  :dunno:

I designed the billboard myself, so I'll take all the criticism. The "3" is identical to the 340 billboard, and the 9 & 2 were what I thought was a pretty close match to the same font....

it could be worse...I could have copied what Grave Yard Cars used  :barf:

Sorry for the unsolicited input   :-X

Did the original 426 hemi cars have 426 or hemi on the billboard?  would it be inappropriate putting hemi on it if the 392 is also one ?   I understand the point of making it reso-mod however, so i'll shut up.

I saw an episode of Detroit muscle where they did a cuda for Dana white UFC owner.   They made a UFC billboard but at the end of episode it said 440.. guess he didn't like it.

Hey, I enjoy ALL the input, it's nice to see members actually click on my threads and comment....good or bad I'll take it all.... :)

Of course 426Hemi cars had billboards that said "HEMI" but that, like "HEMICUDA" hood emblems, seemed all too simple for this build...I was trying to be a little creative  :dunno:

Looking great! I wish I sometime get to testdrive an e-body with that kind of suspension, on my Challenger I decided to go with upgraded stock, but I'm so curious how
the overall drive feel would be with coils. Tempted to do this on my Barracuda when the time comes to restore it.
Give us a report when it's done Alan!

I have a Control Freak front end with adjustable Viking coil-overs and a 4-link rear with Viking coil-overs.  Steering is manual rack and pinion. The car handles very well but the coil-overs give it a very stiff ride. I live in Toronto where the city streets are horrible with a lot of potholes and uneven road surfaces so I like to find smooth, winding country roads to really enjoy the ride.

If you don't mind sharing what does a new convertible top run these days?
I'm interested in a buying survivor car that every time I've seen it, the top is down.  I'm suspicious it's needing replacement and want to be forewarned on prices if the top needs replaced.

The top kit with a glass back window is not that much....Looking at my records, I paid $715 CDN ALL IN with taxes shipping from FLA etc....That's like $500 USD  :dunno:  I also bought a new pump, hoses, cylinders, bushings, well liner and boot....

I paid my guy $1800 for the install though... again CDN $1260 USD roughly

I have an account and get a slight discount from these guys, I bought everything except the boot from them

I'm curious why you went with a custom system. Don't companies like Magnaflow, etc that already have plug and play systems?

Great question...Last year when I was doing that black Challenger I could not get the TTI tail pipes to work around the custom RMS rear syspension.
(others say they have, but mine wasn't going to fit no way no how) Plus this stainless system was cheaper then the TTI regular metal system :dunno:

Looks great!

That's a plus to get a "custom" made system for cheaper than tti's non stainless system.
Sounds like tti is charging too much.

Our main issue with TTI is just the shipping/border crossing/taxes/exchange rate, etc....the cost gets outrageous

Spending money never quits does it?

The new hemi with fuel injection  should run pretty smooth,  but my concern about the welded mufflers has always been the kettle drum sound.
Building a 2.5 stainless system  right now with various sizes of pass through and bullet mufflers and x pipe .  The challenge is getting the volume of noise down.
Again,  making the rest of us look bad...

So this is what I was after, a nice clean un-cluttered interior....Modern upgrades without the in your face custom stuff...no TV screens, cup holders or custom consoles, in fact no rattlely original console either....The only thing I'm not 100% happy with is the rear seat, the idea is what I wanted, but it wasn't executed very well....think I may have it re-done over the Winter if it continues to bug me that much...

Thanks to Bards70 for suggesting the steering wheel and manufacturing the adaptor for me, I do think it looks like a modern Tuff Grip wheel...

Short list of things left to do:
Bleed brakes
Bleed clutch
4 wheel alignment
Charge AC
Safety Inspection
Insurance

Hit the key yesterday and it fired right up :dunno: didn't run it long, or even above an idle....I prefer to have a clutch and brakes first, before I worry about it running

PWR Top switch from PG Classics already failed and needs to be replaced, but currently out of stock of course... :headbang:

Unfortunately have to agree with your "eye" on the back seat.
Suggestion is to keep the theme. But toned down from front.
Right now their style is competing with the fronts.
Curves and headrests remain but minimalized.

@anlauto (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/anlauto_19) I Hate to bother you about this n an e-body forum but I noticed yours has a stripped interior. When my Duster was re-assembled the previous owner did a meticulous job he disliked the shoulder belts along the roof. He thought they ruined the clean  look. So my headliner was installed and and I struggling to find where the bolt is. Next time you are near it is there any change you could take a picture or a measurement of it's location? My headliner is so taught that I fear pressing on it will ruin it. I tried finding it with an infrared camera but it wasn't definitive. If it's too much i understand, but I don't really have any experts in the Ottawa area that can help me out with this.

@72 Challenger (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/72-challenger_1015) the car is not here at my shop, so give me a day or two to get out to the body shop and I will be able to help you out. I couldn't find any pictures on my computer.

As always, everything looks amazing, @anlauto (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/anlauto_19)... If I may ask, I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on some of the Jeep seats, and was wondering just how/what you had to tweak on the seat bases to get them to fit in an E-Body properly...?
Title: Re: A.G.A.R. Final Pictures

@73_Cuda_4_Me (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/73cuda4me_966) They come with fairly simple tracks that are "roughly" the same width and length as E Body outer tracks. However, when bolted to the seat they end up a little narrower and shorter in the "Square" pattern of the four holes in the floor.

So...to accommodate this, on the outer track I welded little tabs out the outside of the new Cipher track with studs on them that go through the floor.
Now on the inside track, it was a little more involved...I removed the "riser" part from the original E Body inside track and bolted it to the floor just as you would a factory seat.

Then with both the new Cipher tracks bolted to the seat, outer track having my new tabs with studs....I installed the seat resting on the inside riser...Then I marked where the Cipher track was seating on the stock riser, marked it, removed everything and welded it up as well.

The tracks supplied by Cipher have a handle out the front instead of the side, it works great and they operate smoothly.

So @anlauto (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/anlauto_19), are those the actual racing seat brackets sold by Cipher for the 70-74 Barracuda, and is there a difference between Cuda and Chally as far as stock slider brackets??? They show a square flat stock bracket welded up for their web page, and have disclaimer "not actual bracket for the intended vehicle".

Is there any advantage or disadvantage to go with the cloth insert style over the regular seat material style?

NO...these tracks are included in the price of the seats and come with, there's nothing extra to order. However, you may try ordering the extra mounts and see how they work out, if you do, let me know.

When you're out driving your car in -40* in the Winter, cloth may be warmer.....or if you're driving you car in 105* temps at Carlisle, the cloth may not burn into your skin ?

@anlauto (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/anlauto_19)  - I may just try ordering the mounting brackets that they recommend, just to see, and will let you know how they fit. I emailed them to see if I can get a picture of the actual brackets they recommend for installation, to see what they  look like. Will let you know.

I am drawn to the cloth insert model, just for a little 'breathability' driving mostly summer cruises on hot sunny days...

Thanks, Alan! Again, your projects look SO amazing! :bradsthumb:

Alan did you happen to grab a photo a little more towards the front A pillar that shows where the clips that hold the seatbelt when it is not in use?

Thanks!

I didn't take any more pictures that day, but again, I will be going back there soon....You can see two screw holes in the first picture I posted from where I removed the bracket...If you removed your brackets too, I think you'll be S-O-L on finding that location. :alan2cents:

Thanks for the education Allan, I wasn't even aware there was a bracket. I didn't put the headliner in, the previous owner left them out to look "clean" but I prefer original. I thought I could put them back in this summer as a "simple" project.

I will hit up google to see what these brackets look like and see if I can determine if they are under the headliner or not.

Thanks for your help!

Good evening Alan,
I was admiring your suspension upgrades and wondering what you did front and rear for suspension. I'm working on a 71 Barracuda hardtop and want to do something similar. Thanks
